Even if Jayson and Ariel were divorced, feelings wouldn’t just disappear overnight.
Ariel was likely just acting tough. Chances were, she would end up treasuring all of Jayson’s things and quietly packing them away herself.
Just as Jayson was about to get up, his phone rang. It was Betty.
He rubbed his forehead and answered, “Grandma, have you had lunch already?”
Betty snorted. “Oh, you still remember I’m your grandma?”
Jayson loosened his tie and smirked faintly. “Now that’s unfair.”
“Don’t try to change the subject.” Betty was clearly annoyed. “You haven’t been back in ages. Since Valentine’s Day, there’s been no word from you or Ari. You didn’t do anything to upset her, did you?”
The more she thought about it, the more it didn’t sit right.
She had gone out of her way to set the mood for them on Valentine’s Day. Even the hotel confirmed that Ariel didn’t leave until the next day. By all logic, something like that should’ve brought them closer.
So why the sudden radio silence?
Jayson raised a brow and tapped his desk. “I don’t think so.”
Well, aside from that trip to the courthouse.
“Oh, save your lies.” Betty snapped. “You’re almost 30. When are you going to get serious about having kids with Ari? Don’t you like children?”
Jayson used to be fond of kids. But ever since marrying Ariel, he had shown no interest in having one. Their relationship was lukewarm at best.
Married for three years and still no child? To Betty, that was just unthinkable.
It was already their fourth year now. It was time to start pushing.
Jayson didn’t mention the divorce. He simply said, “It’s not in my plans for now.”
“You brat!” Betty cursed. “No wonder Ari always dodged the topic. So you’re the problem!”
If he didn’t want kids, what could Ariel do?
Jayson didn’t argue.
Betty took a deep breath, then added, “This is your responsibility. Don’t try to brush it off. Bring Ari back here for a few days. That’s final.”
With that, she hung up without giving him a chance to refuse.
Jayson looked at the screen and didn’t take it to heart.
Ariel had just walked out of Faye Technologies when Colton’s message came through.
He said Jayson would go as soon as possible, but still did not give an exact time, as if she had no choice but to wait.
Since she had no direct way to contact Jayson, even if he was deliberately leaving her hanging, there was nothing she could do.
Ariel frowned, but she couldn’t be bothered anymore.
When the house was sold, he couldn’t blame her for not giving him enough notice.
That evening, she had a meeting to go over project planning details with Jonathan and the team. The meeting was set at a golf club.
Chad had to make an unexpected business trip and was now driving back. He would be late, so he told her to go ahead without him.
Janice couldn’t handle the technical side of the project, so Ariel had to go in person. Already feeling a bit drained, she called a cab straight to the venue instead of driving herself.
After checking in under Chad’s membership, a staff member guided her through the grounds. They took a shuttle to the course.
Just as Ariel stepped off, she heard cheerful laughter not far off. Turning around, she saw a group of people who also spotted her.
Nancy was in the middle of swinging a golf club.
Nearby, Jayson sat with his legs crossed, chatting with Perry. Hearing the noise, he turned to look.
Matt, standing next to them with a club slung over his shoulder, spotted Ariel. He tilted his head and grinned.‘ Ariel, you’re already divorced and still so clingy?”
