Nancy hadn’t expected to get this response from Chad. Her earnest, gentle expression cracked slightly.
For a moment, Nancy even wondered if she had misheard.
Beside her, Jayson remained unruffled. He slowly lifted his gaze and glanced at Ariel. There was a calm look in his deep–set eyes. Strangely, there was a trace of amusement in those orbs.
Ariel was cool and composed. Her expression remained the same even after she heard Chad’s words.
Jayson’s brows lifted as he seemed to have recalled something. He averted his gaze from Ariel.
Nancy pursed her lips and said flatly, “Mr. Chad, I know that you probably find my request a bit burdensome.”
She didn’t think Chad would say something so absurd just because he was unwilling to talk to Carlos about her request. Nancy reckoned he had probably dragged Ariel into this just to refuse her request in a roundabout way.
After a short pause, Nancy responded calmly. She did not seem to have taken any offense. “I sincerely wish to receive Mr. Carlos‘ guidance. I’ll also work hard to secure a spot to become his postgraduate student. Let’s not joke about these matters, Mr. Chad.”
Her paper detailed very advanced and complex concepts and knowledge of their field of study. Excluding the small minority of highly talented people like Chad, Nancy considered someone of her level pretty exceptional.
Even if Ariel had learned a lot from Chad, there was no way she had reached the level to understand the paper Nancy was working on. Nancy reckoned Ariel’s level must be way below hers.
Jayson said nothing. He did not seem surprised by Chad’s earlier remarks. He said in a steady tone, “It’s alright. You don’t have to worry about it, Mr. Chad. We’ll talk about this some other time.”
Chad was grinning broadly. However, there was a sense of weariness inside him.
He was not even joking. Ariel was absolutely qualified to review and comment on Nancy’s paper, yet the latter wouldn’t trust him.
It wasn’t like Chad would go so far as to beg these people to find out more information about Ariel. Furthermore, Nancy was prejudiced against Ariel. Chad could only say this much under these circumstances.
Just then, Tom approached the group. He informed Jayson about some work–related matters that required his advice. Jayson looked at Ariel. Then, he turned his eyes to Chad.
Jayson gave a slight nod. “Mr. Chad, you and Ms. Walker can take your time looking around. Let’s have a chat again soon.”
Nancy stiffened slightly. She didn’t like the fact that Jayson had even bothered mentioning Ariel.
Nancy felt that Jayson should just completely ignore Ariel during these instances. There was no need for him to mention her out of courtesy. Ariel might misunderstand his actions and take it that Jayson was paying special attention to her.
Ariel kept her gaze lowered. With the frigid look on her face, it seemed like she had not heard anything Jayson said.
Chad responded politely, “Sure. See you around, Mr. Larkin ”
It started raining outside all of a sudden. One could feel how chilly it was outside just by looking out the window.
Nancy halted and directed her gaze to Jayson. Her lips turned up in a smile. “Jayson, it looks like the weather has turned a bit cold. I’m not wearing enough layers today. Can you lend me your jacket?”

Before he offered Artel his jacket, Jayson had probably let Nancy wear that jacket as well.
Ariel was so glad that she had tossed the jacket back to him quickly.
Tom was in awe. “I’ve never seen Mr. Larkin in public with any other woman before. I never got to see the gentler side of him either. Ever since Ms. Stanton showed up, Mr. Larkin had been doing a lot of things he normally
