I’m back in the great hall. The torches burn low, but it is bright enough to see everyone
clearly.
I hear the chatter of the pack, the laughter, the low sound of drums. My father stands at the center, towering, proud, his voice echoing as he calls for silence.
“Tonight, I present to you my new consort.”
The air thickens, and my chest tightens, though I don’t know why. The crowd parts, and I see the figure cloaked in silk, a veil hiding her face. My wolf stirs uneasily, claws dragging against the walls of my mind.
Then…she lifts her veil, and my breath stops.
It’s her.
My fated mate, Diana.
She smiles, radiant, but it’s not for me. It’s for him–my father. She leans into his arm as though it’s her rightful place, her eyes catching mine across the hall. There’s no shame in her eyes, no apology.
Everyone began to whisper…the whispers were loud.
“…of course she chose the Alpha…”
“…the son humiliated before us all…”
I want to speak, to shout, but my throat burns and no sound comes out. My legs are rooted. My father’s hand slides over her waist, staking his claim. My wolf howls inside me, broken, yet no one hears.
Then, suddenly, the scene distorts. The hall stretches like molten glass, faces melting into masks. Diana’s smile grows wider until it splits her face in two. My father laughs proudly…while Diana stares at me…her eyes burn with cold fire.
I stumble back, but the ground swallows my feet. The more I struggle, the deeper I sink. They stand above me, watching me.
I reach for her, Diana, for the bond that once pulled at my soul, but she turns away, pressing

“Well, you can’t keep running off into the woods every time it comes crashing down on you. I know you, Alexander–you’re better than this. You’re the strongest person I know. But that rage… it could destroy you from the inside,” Cole said.
I let him finish his lecture, then nodded. “I get it. Can we go inside now? ” I asked.
“No. I lost every trace of sleep running after you. Now you’re going to sit out here and drink with me… Alpha,” he said with a smirk. “I’ll grab some drinks.”
