Chapter 511
As soon as he finished speaking, he looked up and spotted Charlotte standing at the entrance of the emergency room, watching him quietly.
“Keep her locked up,” Anthony said, waving for Charlotte to come over. When she reached his side, he leaned in and spoke softly, “Tell Melissa the driver already confessed. Let her stew for a few more hours.”
He wanted Lottie to deal with Jesse first.
Once he’d given his orders, Anthony gently took Charlotte’s wrist. His eyes lingered on her pale face, and his voice shifted from icy to warm. “Come on.”
Charlotte followed him without protest, thinking he was taking her home or maybe to the police station to handle Melissa. She only realized where they were when the car pulled up outside the Cabinda Psychiatric Hospital.
Anthony got out first, his face serious. Without saying anything, he took her hand and led her to the entrance.
Charlotte trailed after him, feeling her face go even paler. But when she looked up, she caught the sunset casting a golden glow over Anthony’s features. In that light, he looked heartbreakingly beautiful. With him by her side, even the hardest things seemed a little easier.
She smiled just a bit and edged closer to him, almost unconsciously seeking comfort.
Inside, a staff member led them straight to an isolation room. Charlotte already knew who was waiting behind that door.
Right before they went in, Anthony let go of her hand. He brushed her hair back from her forehead, smiled, and whispered, “I’ll wait for you out here. Remember, even if everything falls apart, I’ll always be here for you.”
Charlotte’s heart skipped a beat.
She squeezed his fingers, stood still for a moment, then pushed open the door and walked inside.
As the door closed behind her, Anthony lowered his head. Under his messy hair, his eyes shone with worry and tenderness.
After today, nothing from her past would ever haunt her again.
The room was pitch black, the sharp smell of disinfectant thick in the air. It felt all too familiar, except now the person locked inside was the one who had once hurt her.
“Who’s there? Who is it?” someone
called out, voice tense and shaky Jesse was curled up in the corner. “I
already told you, I’m not seeing
anyone but Charlotte.
“Well, here I am. Now what?”
Jesse froze at the sound of her
voice, then scrambled to his feet et
shaking. The lights snapped on He saw Charlotte standing by the door. her face unreadable eyes cold as

Jesse’s heart dropped. He crawled toward her, desperate. “You finally came. You’re really here.”
Charlotte said nothing.
That’s when Jesse noticed the scalpel she was holding.
“Charlotte, I’m sorry,” he blurted, falling to his knees. “I know I messed up. Please, I’m begging you. Just give me another chance.”
Being cooped up here day after day, he was already losing his mind.
Charlotte’s face was hard as stone. She backed him into the corner, her voice low and edged with hatred. “I’m here to finish what I started back then.” Jesse blinked, confused. “Finish what-”
Before he could finish, Charlotte raised the scalpel and drove it straight into his thigh.
Jesse screamed, a raw, ragged sound that echoed off the walls. Before he could recover, she yanked the blade free and stabbed it into the back of his hand.
He had almost ruined her forever. He’d nearly made it impossible for her to ever stand next to Anthony, whole and unbroken. What she’d done to him wasn’t nearly enough.
