Beasley spotted the speaker and his brows knit together, worry flickering in his eyes. Letty was the pride of The Cabinda Medical Branch. If she lost to a newcomer, it wouldn’t just be her taking the hit, it would embarrass the entire organization. Was Hollis stepping up to back Letty and protect their reputation? It sure looked that way. This did not bode well.
Beasley wasn’t the only one feeling the pressure. The whole Traditional Medicine Class from Kingswood University, along with students from other schools, looked tense and anxious.
“See? I knew there was something off with her surgery.” Carmelita, who had been at a loss for words earlier, now glanced at Charlotte on stage with a self-satisfied grin. “There’s a big difference between luck and actual skill,” she said, basking in her own confidence.
All around, people started whispering, and Glenn pressed his lips together, his gaze landing on Charlotte. She stood there with her hands in her pockets, her beautiful face calm and unreadable, as if none of this had anything to do with her.
But from Glenn’s point of view, the surgery was flawless. In fact, it was more than just okay-it was a clear success. He thought back to how Charlotte had handled the laparoscope, quick and precise, as if she’d done it a hundred times. She’d found the heart’s location right away and picked up on the changes without missing a beat. That level of confidence and skill wasn’t just rare for a first-year student. Even seasoned doctors wouldn’t dare take notes with that kind of certainty. Charlotte was honestly impressive.
Suddenly, everyone’s attention shifted to Hollis.
“Mr. Hollis, please go ahead.”
The chairman of the judging panel smiled and gestured for Hollis to take the stage. Hollis grabbed the microphone, his face serious, and walked straight toward Charlotte and Letty.
Letty’s eyes lit up when she saw him. She dipped her head with a polite smile. “Mr. Hollis.”
He gave her a nod and smiled back. “Your experiment went well.”
Letty was the youngest and most promising member of The Cabinda Medical Branch, and today’s performance had been a win. Hotlis looked pleased, and the praise made Letty’s nerves melt away. She was sure Hollis was here to back her up.
But before Letty could really enjoy the moment, Hollis turned to Charlotte, his face growing more serious. “Have you studied medicine before?” His voice was quiet but direct.
“I’ve had some experience,” Charlotte replied, meeting his gaze without any hint of flattery.
Some experience? That meant she’d studied it. But she was only eighteen, and her hands-on skills were on another level. She had to be a natural, or maybe she’d been trained from a young age. Either way, it was impressive.
“I mentioned earlier that there was a problem with your surgery,” Hollis continued, watching her closely. “Do you know what it was?”
Charlotte glanced at the mouse, then back at Hollis. “I don’t think there was a problem,” she said, her tone steady and sure.
Her confidence was impossible to miss.
Letty’s face tightened and she shot Charlotte a sharp look. Hollis was a leading authority in the medical field. If he said there was a problem, most people would just accept it without question.
The whole room seemed to hold its breath, every eye locked on the stage.
Hollis didn’t seem the least bit upset by Charlotte’s answer. If anything, there was a spark of admiration in his eyes. He studied her for a few seconds, and when he saw that she wasn’t intimidated at all, his respect for her only deepened.
