Chapter 10

An hour passes, and still, there’s no sign of the doctor or my mate.  I was getting reckless.  Lynx was pacing around.  I stared at the corridor but noticed movement. The doctor from earlier came into view and walked over to us.  I straightened up.  The doctor stopped just in front, and his eyes landed on Jenny.  “Leah is ok,” he said. “She is stable now.”  “What did the scan say?” Jenny asked, standing up.  The doctor looked at her, but his eyes looked at me for a few moments before giving Jenny his undivided attention. “The scan showed no signs of anything. We have no clue what caused the collapse or what you described.” 1 Jenny let out a low sob and sat back down.  I looked at the doctor.  “Do you have any idea how this could have happened?”  “I don’t know,” he said, looking at me. “I would have said bleed on the brain, but there was no sign. Nothing showed on the scan.”  He looked at me, but his eyes went to Jenny. “Has Leah been sleeping or stressed lately?”  I turned to look at Jenny, her eyes wide, and she nodded slightly.  “I forced her to move back with me,” she said with a whimper. “Her friend told me before we left that she hasn’t been sleeping either. Did I do this?”  I looked back at the doctor, who shook his head.  “No, I don’t think so,” he said, “I just needed to know what happened or if anything in her life had changed, but I think the lack of sleep didn’t help; it would all depend on how much sleep she has been having, and put stress on top of it all, not just moving here but the loss of her father, anything could have caused this, but since we don’t know what this is, we have to keep her in for a few days.”  I started at him.  I had my own suspicions, which I wasn’t going to share with them what I thought. Lynx grunted but also agreed with what I was thinking.  Jenny’s actions may have caused part of this whole thing as well; she was hellbent on seeing her, moving her here. I knew she was planning on bringing her back first as she had arranged to meet the father. They met, and he agreed to talk to Leah, but it was up to her if she wanted to get in contact. Jenny agreed, but when she received the call from the hospital about the accident and the death of her ex-partner. She was horrified and wanted to go there.  When she got there, a social worker was waiting to see her and stated Leah had to move in with a relative, even if a friend could take her in, as she is only seventeen. Jenny was heartbroken and didn’t know what to do, so she contacted Julian and me for advice. 1 I agreed that Leah should be with people she knew, but Jenny wondered if she could move onto the pack and be part of the pack. I was reluctant about it as her daughter was human and didn’t know about us. There was a lot of twisting and throwing, but Julian mentioned an old pack member lived close by to the human town, which surprised me.  The old pack member told me that she could come on to the pack and would have to swear her loyalty to us, never mentioning our kind to other humans. He also stated that documents could be filled out for Jenny to claim her daughter and records for us to ensure that we kept up with the code of having a human on the grounds.  Julian did all the work and even wrote the documents to prove everything was above board.  I shook my head and stared at the doctor.  “What do we do now?” I asked.  The doctor sighed. “She needs to rest, and she will be fine in no time,” he said.  I nodded, and the doctor turned away, heading back down the corridor.  I looked around at everyone who had waited. “I think we should all leave and get some rest,” I said.  “I want to stay,” muttered Jenny. 1 I shook my head.  “No,” I said. “Jen, she needs to rest, and after everything that happened, she needs to stay calm.”  Jenny looked at me but didn’t say anything.  Josh walked up to her, placing his hand on her shoulder. “Alpha Carson is right,” he said, making Jenny turn to look at him. “Leah needs some rest. The doctor will be with her, and she needs to calm down after what happened.”  Jenny shook her head, “She will be on her own,” she said, looking around at us.  “She won’t be,” I said. “I will stay for a while, but I think it is best if the doctor talks to her before anyone sees her; she needs to trust someone.”  “What about me?” someone said, making me turn around to see my sister, Cassie standing there.  I frowned.  “What?” I asked. “Why would you do that?”  Cassie shrugged.  “I think she may feel comfortable with someone her own age,” she said, looking around at everyone. “I can stay here while you all go to rest, but if she wakes up, I can talk to her, maybe even be her friend.”  I stared at my sister and sighed.  “Ok,” I said, looking around as the doctor returned.  “Doc,” I said, making him look at me. “Alpha.”  “We will all leave to get some rest, but I want you to notify Jenny and me when she awakens,” I said. “Cassie is going to sit here too.”  The doctor nodded.  Everyone stayed for a few moments till they left one by one, leaving me with Cassie and Jenny. Josh went outside to wait for Jenny; the boys had left a few moments before the doctor came with her parents.  As we were about to leave, we heard the noise of a bed being moved; I looked toward the door when I saw the nurses pushing Leah’s bed out earlier, came back, and wheeled her into the room.  I caught a glimpse of her, which made my heart flutter slightly.  Lynx was close by but never came close to being seen.  Jenny and I walked toward the door as they set her up in the room; Jenny and I walked in to look at her. Leah seemed so small in the bed, like a doll.  I couldn’t see her features well due to the bandage around her head.  The doctor walked in and went to check her vitals. Once he was done, he turned around and gave us a small smile. “You both should leave,” he said. “I will have a nurse check on her every hour.”  I nodded.  The doctor left, with the door closing behind him.  Jenny walked around the bed and stood at the foot, staring down at her. I could feel her emotions as they filled the air around us. “I used to sing to her when she was three,” she whispered.  My eyes looked at her but landed back on my mate.  Jenny sniffed.  “You have to win her over like a human,” she said, which made me look at her.  I stiffened, but Jenny carried on. “You have to take her on dates and get to know her,” she said. “The old fashion way.” 1 I didn’t say anything.  Jenny looked back at me, then back at Leah, and sighed. “Her father was someone I fell in love with; even my wolf liked him,” she said. “I didn’t even know I was pregnant till two months before I gave birth.”  Jenny looked at me, but something was there.  She shook her head but changed the subject.  “I think we both need to get some sleep,” she said, turning to leave, “I will leave you to have a few moments alone with her.”  She turned and walked toward the door to leave, but I stared at my mate.  Once Jenny was out the door, I walked over and stood where Jenny stood.  I placed my hand in hers, and sparks shot through me.  There was no denying it; she was my mate.  My mother told me all that to look for when finding my mate. Her scent, the tingles or sparks, my wolf acting odd, everything was due to my mate.  Lynx came forward slightly and stared at our mate. He lets a whimper slip through. I can feel his sadness wash over me.  “Mate,” he whined.  I felt his pain.  I wanted her eyes to open, but I had to play this right.  “Lynx,” I said softly, making him look at me. “We need to do this right with our mate. I mean, we have to date her, get to know her. But we will be around, even if we have to camp outside her door every night to be calm. We can do this.”  I don’t even know who I was trying to convince, him or me.  Lynx stared back at me.  He lets out a huff of annoyance and retreats slightly. He lays down in my head and stares at me. “Ok, we do that way,” he said. 1 I nodded.  I looked back at my mate and leaned forward slightly. I kissed her cheek, and slight tingles ignited inside me.  Her scent engulfed me as I got closer. I could feel my mouth water at the smell.  I moved back slightly and let go of her hand.  I looked at her but moved away slowly.  I walked toward the door and opened it. It closed behind me as I walked through it. I looked around and noticed the nurse looking at me as I stood in front of the door.  “Alpha,” she said.  I nodded and turned to walk away.  I knew sleep wouldn’t happen until I knew she was awake. But what then? I thought, she doesn’t even know I exist.  I walked out of the hospital and headed toward the pack house.  I needed a drink, and I needed to think of what I would do next.
