Chapter 19
Zain and I ran for hours. Letting our wolves have a good run was just what the doctor ordered. Zain returned to the pack house as he had to finish something. Lynx and I sat at the forest line, watching Zain sprint back inside, naked. I frowned. I was not too fond of it when he did that. Lynx let out a yawn and made himself comfy. He looked toward the hospital. I knew where he wanted to be, but we couldn’t. Being there with her would be too weird, especially as we had just met. “Mate,” he whispered. “I know,” I said, looking through his eyes. It was a peaceful night. “Do you think mate’s family will listen?” Lynx muttered. I could feel his eyes on me, but it was a hard question. I would say yes, but how Paul acted in the office made me on edge. Lynx let out a low growl. “He’s up to something,” he murmured. “One thing is certain, and he doesn’t like mate.” I stared at him. That was the same feeling I got from him, but how could a man act like that to a grandchild? Lynx said nothing as he kept his eyes on the hospital. I knew we needed to go in, but I knew sleep would not happen soon. My head was everywhere. Lynx let out another yawn and pushed me forward. I shifted back into my human form and stared out. Thank the goddess, Leah can’t see out her window. The amount of nakedness she will see may cause her to question everything that goes on here. “Mate will find out soon about who we are,” Lynx said excitedly. I glanced around and found a pair of sports shorts near a tree. Someone must have left them out here when they were training earlier. I placed them on and headed toward the pack house. As we went in, I headed upstairs. I stopped outside my room but didn’t want to go in there. I knew where I wanted to go: to see Mum. I went to her room and went to open the door, only for Cassie to be standing before me with a frown on her face. “What are you doing here?” she whispered. “Mum just went to bed. She had a rough day.” I stared at her, slightly concerned. I knew what my mum’s rough days were like, which were horrendous. She would either cry or wouldn’t eat or even get out of bed. “Is she okay?” I asked. “Do I need to call the pack doctor?” Cassie shook her head and stepped out of my mother’s room, closing the door as quietly as possible. She looked at me. “She hasn’t moved all day,” she said. “I made sure she ate something, but even that was hard.” I stared at her as she continued. “The pack doctor told us this might happen often, but it will soon pass. We need to get her motivated or think about something else.” What the hell was going to motivate my mum? She had only been downstairs a few times, and that was once for my Alpha ceremony, but she was only at the ceremony, and then she left. I felt Cassie’s eyes on me, which made me frown. “What?” I asked. Cassie stared but sighed. “I know it is too early for this,” she said. “But how about you tell Mum about your mate?” I stared at her as my eyebrows scrunched together. “I don’t think…” I said, but Cassie cut me off. “I heard what happened at the hospital. It’s been going around the pack like fun, especially with the omegas, and it will only take one person to say something up here when they are cleaning Mum’s room for her to find out, and you don’t want her to find out off someone else.” I stared at her. She had a point. I sighed. “Yeah, you’re right,” I muttered. I hated admitting that, especially to Cassie or Zain. “Mum needs to know.” Lynx agreed, even though he was resting in my head the whole time. I could feel him through our connection. “Maybe we can ask mama wolf what to do about mate’s family,” he murmured. He had a point. Mum knew Jenny back then. Maybe she might know what the hell was going on with her father, especially since he thinks my father would never approve of Leah being my mate. My mum knew my father better than anyone. The mere thought of my father was a touchy subject with her but also with Cassie and me. I looked at Cassie as she left, and I followed her. “I will tell her about Leah,” I said. “There are a few issues I had to take care of, mainly her care, as Jenny wasn’t listening. Do you think Mum could help?” Cassie stopped and looked over her shoulder at me. She gave me a slight nod. “Yeah,” she said. “We just might have to wait till she is having a good day.” That was true. I didn’t want to make her worse by bringing up something that could lead her to have another breakdown again. “Sure,” I said. Cassie smiled. “Where are you going now?” I asked. Cassie frowned. “I ordered a pizza,” she said and looked over at me. “Do you want to share with me? I ordered two meaty ones, and we can have one each.” I grinned. “Yeah, sure,” I said. I followed my sister and headed back downstairs. I know I have eaten today, but I was still not tired. “Come on,” Cassie said. “I will get one omega to bring the pizzas up, and we can eat in your room, and you can tell me what has been going on with your mate and that family of hers?” I smiled. “Sounds like a plan,” I said as we headed toward my room. As we walked in, a mind link opened up, and it was from the nurse. “Alpha,” she said. “I thought I would give you an update on Leah. She is still sleeping, and her vitals are looking perfect. The doctor will be around tomorrow evening. He thought he would leave her till last as she can leave when night comes as no wolf would be around.” “Sure,” I said. “I will send out a pack link for all wolves to be away from the hospital and not to be in their wolves forms. We don’t want to scare her before she gets to her mother’s house.” The nurse giggled. “That would be awkward,” she said. “I will tell you what the doctor said and how she is tomorrow.” “Thanks,” I said. There was silence for a moment before she continued. “Alpha, I know she has to go with them,” she said. “But do you think it is for the best for Leah? I mean, after what happened with her mother and the rest of the family earlier?” “I spoke to them earlier,” I blurted out. “I have made precautions, and if they don’t abide by them, she will move into the pack house. But hopefully that won’t happen.” “I have my fingers crossed,” she said. “But I must admit, Alpha, the pack house may be the best solution for her, especially how they are acting.” I said nothing. She was right. The pack house was the safest place for her to be, but they needed to fuck up before I could do anything. Hopefully, it will all work out. I hear Lynx grunt in my head. “Very unlikely,” he said. I knew he was right, but I had to give them a chance. I said goodbye to the nurse and looked at my sister, who was now staring at me. “Who was that?” she asked. I leaned back and sighed. I might as well tell her what had happened. I was about to say something when someone knocked on the door. Cassie opened it, took the pizzas off the omega, and closed the door behind her. Cassie placed the boxes down and sat back in the chair opposite me. Her eyes bore back into mine. “Now tell me everything,” she said. I took a slice of pizza from a box and took a bite. Once I swallowed it, I told her what had happened today. After I explained everything, Cassie looked at me, stunned. “Wow,” she said. “That’s crazy. I have never thought Paul would act like that, especially toward his child’s daughter. It’s messed up.” I nodded. “Well, we will see how it goes,” I said. “I just hope they listen and don’t push Leah, or this will backfire on them.” Cassie nodded. “I always thought Jenny was a great person,” she said, looking at me. “I even tried to tell Leah that, but now I may have been wrong.” I stared at her. Jenny was around a lot when Cassie was little, so she knows what she is like, but people change all the time, especially when situations happen. “We see how it goes,” I muttered. “I don’t want to jinx anything.” Cassie nodded. We carried on with our pizza and talked about other things. I needed the distraction more than anything; my sister was just what I needed.
