Chapter 30
My mind raced over what I had to say to the pack members. I knew a few members would me against the idea of having a human in the pack, but I didn’t care. 1 Lynx was close by, but said nothing. Many believed that humans would never understand our beliefs or follow our rules. Even though Leah’s my mate, she seemed different to me. She might freak out at the thought of werewolves, or even think I was joking, but I would try to make her see there was nothing to worry about when it came to us. “We not shifting in front of her,” Lynx muttered. “She will definitely runaway.” I looked back at him with a frown. “And knowing you,” I said. “You will run after her and pin her to the ground, licking her to death till she submitted to us.” Lynx stared at me, but I could feel his amusement through our link. “You know me so well, human,” he said with a laugh. “I would lick her till she submitted.” “Probably would wag your tail like a lovesick puppy, too,” I said, making Lynx grunt. “No fair.” I laughed loudly. Lynx was already smitten with our mate; I could feel it. And I had to admit, so was I. Shaking my head from my thoughts and letting out a breath, I opened a pack line to everyone. I take a breath and talk to the pack members. “Good evening pack members,” I said, as I leaned back in my chair to get comfy. “I have an announcement to make. As you all know, we have a visitor in the pack, and I want to tell you all about this person.” I could hear mumbling ring out in my head. Lynx grunted until we heard a voice slip through. “A human, I was told,” someone said, through the link. I couldn’t place who it was, but they sounded like the old generation. Other pack members gasped and mumbled as the person continued to speak. “We don’t need a human within the pack. They will be a liability to us and even—” My anger swirled around me, listening to this person speak about Leah. Letting a low growl slip through the link made everyone quiet, and the person uttered an apology. “Sorry alpha.” “Before you all start giving out information about humans,” I warned. “This person is a human, you are right.” A few growls echoed in my head, but I ignored them. “The human was badly injured in an accident a few days ago, and I ordered her to be brought back to the pack.” “Why?” a woman growled. Slowly getting angrier, a voice came through which startled me and was surprised to hear. “For all your information, Alpha Carson has brought her in due to me,” Jenny said. I could sense some tension through the pack line, but I had an idea who it was—her mother or the old gamma. My father blocked the cells with magic, so Paul can’t communicate or mind link anyone. It’s the only place where no one can talk to anyone in the pack, or whatever the case is. We don’t want people knowing what we do in the cells and sometimes it’s usually worse when rogues are there. Jenny’s voice flooded my head, and I listened to her. She explained who Leah was and who she was to her. When she was done explaining, there were more questions and why I would allow her human to come to the pack. Letting out a growl, I told them who she was to me. “Leah is my mate,” I said as soon as the word mate came out of my mouth, a few gasps came through. “Leah is to be your Luna when she knows who we are.” “You haven’t told her about our kind,” someone asked, sounding worried. “Jenny and I will soon,” I muttered and sighed. “Leah is in the pack house till further notice, and I want you all to be on your best behaviour. You will treat her as you would when we are in the company of humans.” There were a few murmurs coming from the pack link. Some had congratulated me, but others, the older generation, were openly talking about how they would never accept a human as their leader. Lynx was getting angry, and wanted to come through as their alpha, but I stopped him. “Don’t,” I muttered. “I want to know what they think.” Needing to hear the pack members be like this gave me an idea of what to expect from them. I carried on listening in on them. “She will be a fine Luna,” some murmured. “No, she won’t,” another shouted. It was going back and forth, but it was slowly getting out of hand. I had to get a handle on this, or I would have a huge fight against the old generation of wolves and young ones. “ENOUGH,” I shouted. “I have heard everything you have had to say.” Sighing, I continued. “I will state this, and only once, if anyone as so much harms a hair on my mate’s head, they will have me to deal with me. I have a punishment lined up for them, too. Whoever goes against my Luna, goes against me and with that being said, I will banish whoever does and make you a rogue. I will state a label on your name and will let all packs know what and why you have been banished.” There was outraged through the pack link, but most of them were the older generation. “You can’t do that,” someone shouted. “Your father would never do such a thing.” “If one more person defines an order that I give,” I growled, slowly losing control. “I will see you all in the morning for another meeting and that one will be to banish you. I know all that have concerns and worries about my mate, and I assure you, she will make the perfect Luna that anyone has ever seen.” 1 The pack link was silent. I knew I had gotten through to most of them, but there was still some anger slipping through the link. “I will close this link now,” I said. “And let you sleep on it all. As for tomorrow, please beware that Leah is in the pack house and do not mention about what we are.” 1 I close the link and sigh before anyone could say anything else. Knowing how the old generation acted, I had to make it clear to them who was in charge now. My father was a well-respected alpha and had always followed the elder law when it came to humans. Making sure no one stepped out of place and when it came to having a human as a mate, it would have to be placed before a meeting with a few in higher command, such as his beta and gamma. That never rarely happened. I only remember it happening once, and it turned out dreadful. I had to watch a werewolf choose between his family and mate. He left with his mate; he wanted a life with her. His family was furious with my father for making their son choose and could believe he would make a decision that concerned the matters of the heart. That made my father regret what happened and the son’s father asked what would happen if I had a human for a mate. 1 My father asked my opinion after that and I told him I would choose my mate as the moon goddess herself hand picked out our soulmate. When I said that, he decided that no meeting would be made again, only to be with him, but even those conversations were held with shouting and some members leaving. After witnessing what happened in that meeting, I made it my mission to let my pack members love whoever they wanted, even if they were humans. As you might have guessed, some didn’t agree, but they never went against my order or authority when it comes to it. Having my mate as a human is like a blessing in some ways. Who’s going to tell an alpha who he can be mated with? Lynx was quiet, but I think he was trying to collect himself before he spoke to me. I opened another mind link to my sister. Knowing she knew about Leah was something, but our mother didn’t. I wanted to tell her I did, but she wasn’t in the same headspace as she once was when she was with my father. My mother had her own opinions about humans. She mainly found them fascinating and even didn’t like the old ways. Many times, I heard her shout at my father for being an old fool and letting his pack dictate who people should accept as their mates. Thinking about it, it was my mother who made me believe in whoever I had as a mate that I should love whether they were wolf, human or even a unicorn—her words, not mine, but she was hellbent on that part. “Cassie,” I said. “Where are you?” “With mum,” she said. “She didn’t hear the announcement; she was having one of her turns.” I felt my heart break when I heard that. “Don’t do that,” Cassie said, pulling me from my thoughts. “You don’t have to feel guilty. You need to concentrate on Leah, and don’t worry about the pack members. They are old fools who need a reality check.” Hearing that last statement come from her made me come back to reality myself. They were all old fools. Shaking my head, and sighed. “I know,” I muttered. “Anyway, can you do me a favour tomorrow morning?” “Sure, anything,” she said. “Can you sit with Leah?” I asked. “I need to talk to Paul, who is in the cell. But I don’t want to leave Leah on her own. I want you to be there if she wakes up. She will need to see a friendly face.” Cassie snorted. “Friendly face,” she muttered. “I defended Jenny the last time she saw me.” “Apologise to her,” I grunted. “We didn’t know the state of their relationship at the time as we went off on what Jenny had told us.” “True,” she said and sighed. “Sure, only if you visit mum tomorrow.” “Sure,” I said. “I might try to tell her about Leah.” “Yeah, it would be better coming from you,” she said. “Although it all depends on what state she is in when you are here. She seems to zone out more lately.” Making a mental note to visit her, which Lynx agreed to. We said our goodbye, and I closed the link down. I looked around the office and moved out of my chair. All I needed was to see Leah. I got up and walked out of the office. It didn’t take me long to get back to my room. I pushed open the door and found Zain still in the same spot on the couch when I left. Zain looked up at me and sighed. “They need to get with the times,” he whispered as he got up off the couch. He walked over to me and stopped. “What happens if they hear about Paul? Some will find out soon, especially when the old gamma gets talking, not forgetting his mate.” Zain had a point. There will be an uproar on my hands if the older generation finds out about Paul and what I did to him. “No one is to see him,” I said, making Zain frown. “I know that,” he said, rolling his eyes. “While I have been here watching Leah, I made sure I placed a guard I trusted and even told him if anyone, including his mate or gamma, came to see him to let me know. I also stated if he had let them in, I would make a display out of him and his vital organs to all pack members to know never to cross you or me.” The corners of Zain’s lips curl which I couldn’t help rolling my eyes at him. Zain was always good at keeping his promises. Sometimes I think he enjoys torturing more than fucking. Clearing my throat, I looked toward Leah, who was still sleeping peacefully in my bed. “Come here about six,” I said, not looking at him. “I’m going to talk to Paul and find out what the hell his problem is.” “Sure,” Zain said. “Whose going to look after Leah while we are in the cells?” “Cassie,” I said, looking at him. Zain smiled. “Okay,” he said, moving away from me. “I will see you in the morning. Try to get some sleep. You look worse than a monkey on crack in a zoo.” “Shut up,” I grumbled, only making Zain and Lynx laugh. Zain waved and went out through the door, closing it behind him. Keeping my eyes on Leah, I walked over to the couch and sat down. Lynx moved closer and looked at her with me. “She is still sleeping,” he murmured. I said nothing and leaned back on the couch. As my head hit the cushion behind me, my eyes got heavy. I didn’t realize how tired I was until I was sent into complete darkness.
