Chapter 62
JOSH The entire house was eerie, even if people were staying here. It was deafening. Lucian left the house, no telling me anything. There was something going on with him, which he hadn’t said. My mind was still wrapping around the entire process of Leah having a wolf. There were no signs, no scent. How did we not notice? My mind raced between everything with Leah and there was also the attack on the pack. There was so much we needed to know. With a sigh, I lean back against the wall and open a mind link. I need to hear her voice. I miss my mate. “I miss mate too,” my wolf chimed in. “Speak to mate.” Saying nothing, I listened in till she spoke through the link. “Josh,” her voice echoed around my head, which made my heart spike. “Everything okay?” “Yeah,” I murmured. “I thought I would check in while everyone is asleep.” Jenny sighed, while my wolf whined. “My family’s home was thoroughly searched,” she said, her voice showing signs of strain. “I still can’t believe my parents are involved in all this.” That was true, but what would I know? Her parents were people who were well-known around the pack and followed every old rule. I was all for following rules, but when rule change, so do we. None of the old generation would, especially when it came to humans. There was silence on the link, but Jenny cleared her throat before she spoke again. “We also searched the old gamma’s residents too,” she said, which surprised me. I knew he had it in for Carson after his son died, but why do it now? “It seemed to be the place where they all went to plan everything. There are loads of paperwork to go through.” My wolf moved in my head, intrigued by what our mate had said. “That sounds—” I said, but Jenny cut me off with a question that I knew was coming from her. “How’s Leah?” “She’s fine,” I said, knowing there was more to her daughter. That part had to remain between who was in the house. They had their own worries and problems—finding why the gamma and my in-laws wanted to kill Leah, and attack the pack they love. My wolf grunted. “They can sense what we are feeling,” he murmured. Part of me should have waited to contact her after I had spoken to him and Lucian about the whole situation. “You sure?” she asked, pulling me back from my thoughts. “You seem to be hiding something. My wolf can sense it.” “Nothing is wrong,” I muttered, closing my eyes and glancing at my wolf. He shock his head, but laid down in my head. His eyes were still on me while I continued. “Leah is asleep. She had questions which Lucian and I answered.” “What questions?” she asked, sounding full of pain. I knew she wanted to do this part herself, or even together. “Why they wolves were chasing her?” I said. “About our kind. There are loads more she will need to know about, which I thought I leave to you when we come back to the pack.” “Thanks,” she whispered, but I could clearly hear the sadness in her voice, which only made my wolf whine again. “Is there anything that you found from the gamma’s place to tell us anything?” I asked, changing the subject. Jenny sighed. “That’s what we are doing now,” she said. “We are going through the whole thing, but it is all a mess. Alpha Carson said that he will mind link later when we have something.” “I better let you get back to it,” I said, opening my eyes and find Lucian staring at me. He seemed to want to talk about something. “I miss you.” “I miss you too,” she said and closed the link. My eyes stayed on Lucian, who moved from the kitchen door and walked over to the pizza boxes. There were a few slices left, but it was mostly Leah’s, since she didn’t eat much. “Who were talking to?” he asked, looking at me. “Your sister,” I said, moving to the side. “Where the hell did you go?” Lucian said nothing, but his eyes stayed on me. He pulled out a slice of pizza and ate. I watched him till he moved away and sat opposite me on the floor. While he ate the pizza, I told him what Jenny had said. At the mere mention of his parents, I felt his anger slip through, but it was more aimed at his parents. Lucian looked at me and frowned. “Why would the gamma be involved?” he asked, moving his head to the side. “Alpha Carson wasn’t to blame for his son’s death. His son knew what the risks of being a gamma.” I gave him a nod. “He did,” I said. “I watched all the training his father gave over the years. He was good at his job and an even better fighter.” Lucian nodded but sighed. “There were too many rogues in that attack,” he muttered, his eyes glistening as he continued. “We all lost people that day. I lost two friends.” I said nothing. During that attack, I was protecting my family. Making sure they were safe, and once they were, I helped where I could. Finding out about the gamma’s son and the alpha passing was when I felt the pack link tether from them, which told everyone that they were gone. I always believed that the attack was planned. They came out of nowhere and usually when rogues attack we would have had alarms or people screaming but there was nothing, only them coming in from all angles. Shaking my thoughts away, I stayed quiet, but my eyes went to Lucian, who seemed to be in a bitter battle of his own. My wolf came close and sighed. “He is holding back on us about something,” he muttered. “His wolf is on edge.” Knowing that made me wonder what the hell was going on with him. After a few moments, Lucian clears his throat, which only makes me look at him. “I have to tell you something and don’t freak out,” he muttered, which didn’t make me or my wolf like where this was going. Lucian stared at us before he spoke. “Well, it may seem that I may now also be on my father’s rath,” he said, which only made me move and straighten up. “I found my mate.” My eyes widened. “Who?” I asked, which made me feel happy for him. Why would his family be—but before I could even figure out what he meant by his father’s wrath, he continued, and then it all made sense? “She’s human.” I stared at him. There was no need for him to be ashamed of that. “It gets worse,” he muttered, which only made me more confused. “She is Leah’s friend’s mum.” The corners of my mouth curled up slightly into a smirk, which only made him glare at me. “Don’t,” he growled. “She hates me. She wouldn’t even look at me and the names she called me, well they put me to shame.” I chuckled. “What the hell did you think would happen?” I asked once I calmed down. “You took Leah away from her, the only family she had left by the looks on it.” Lucian stared at me and frowned, but I shook my head. “I meant nothing by Jen or you,” I said. “I meant Leah only knew them and had them left.” Lucian said nothing but looked over at the counter. “I stayed here to make it right,” he said and looked back at me. “I offered to stay and even put off coming back.” I gave a slight nod, but he stayed quiet. “You should tell Leah,” I said, which only made his eyes pop. “Maybe she could put in a good word for you.” “I hardly think she would after what I did,” he said. “Like you said, I took her from the only people she had left.” I said nothing, but opened my mouth when I heard something from outside. Glancing at the clock, it was into the early hours and nearly sun up. My wolf growled. “Someone is close by,” he muttered, which only made Lucian and me stand up. We both bolted to the front door and went to either side, while leaning our backs against the wall. There was no way they could see us. Lucian stared at me and mouthed. “My mate’s daughter.” I pressed my finger to my lips and prayed she would leave. There was no need for any humans to get involved, especially if they were close to Leah. And that would be a bad thing. We stayed still for a moment until we hear her let out a sigh and leave. Feeling the tension in my shoulder sag slightly, I looked up to the stairs and sighed. “We need to be more careful,” I whispered, my eyes never leaving the stairs. “We don’t know what the hell is going on and we don’t need anymore surprises.” Lucian nodded and pushed off the door. “I think we should take turns,” he muttered, glancing at the kitchen. “You take the first watch. I’m going to sleep.” I frowned. There was no furniture around here, so where the hell was he going to sleep? My eyes darted to Lucian, who smirked. He pressed his finger to his lips and shook his head. “I will tell you when you need some sleep,” he said and walked away. Where the hell was he going? My wolf huffed. “He is shifting into his wolf,” he muttered. “They are going to keep an eye on the house and their mate.” I rolled my eyes and sighed. Pushing off the wall, I moved and turned around. I sat on the step and got as comfy as I could. I kept my eyes trained on the door while I let my thoughts wonder again, but mainly wondering why the young girl came over here. She knew Leah was gone. There was no need to be here. My wolf said nothing, but I knew he was pondering over what I was thinking. There were too many things going on and we needed to get a break, and fast before it could end up killing more people including Leah, which was worrying and I knew I shouldn’t think like that, but there was nagging doubt something was coming and we were all going to get swept in whatever it brings.
