Chapter 82

CARSON  I stepped into my mother’s room and closed the door, while I looked around to see Cassie standing up near the window,  Once the door was closed, I walked over to the couch to find mum laying down on it and asleep.  “That was scary,” Cassie whispered, which made me look over at her. “She fell asleep when you took him outside.”  Stepping closer, I moved till I was to her side while her eyes were locked on the scenery before her. “She never acted like that toward him, Carson. That was a first.”  My eyes went to the window and sighed. “What changed? Did she take his medication or—”  “That’s the thing,” Cassie said, placing her hand on my arm to make me look at her. Her eyes were glistening, tears that were being held back. My sister was trying her best to stay strong and was slowly losing it.  Not saying a word, I pulled her into me and as soon as her head went to my chest I could feel her tears on my top. I smoothed her head, while placing my head on hers while turning it to look out the window.  There was no way she would tell me anything, not like this.  We stood like that for a while till I heard her sniffle slightly and pull back from me. “I’m okay now,” she said softly. Her eyes were red and puffy, but she gave me a small smile. “I needed that. I think I had been holding in a lot over the last few months and didn’t know how to let it out.”  My heart broke for her, while Lynx let out a whine in my head. He hated seeing his little sister like this, but now she would be okay.  Putting my hands into fists, I used them to rub up and down her arms. It usually soothes her when she needs to calm down. “It’s okay. We just need to figure out what happened.”  Cassie nodded and then her eyes moved to mum. I did the same. Mum looked peaceful, snoring softly.  “She didn’t take her medication last night,” Cassie said, making me look back at her with a frown but she was still looking at mum, but she continued. “The doctor came in here and started what he normally does, talking to her about the pack and who he saw. Mum said nothing, only stared at him like she was seeing him for the first time. When he placed his bag and opened it to the medications that was when mum just flipped. She scratched at him and even screamed, yelling not to give her the pills.”  Anger was coursing through my veins, while Lynx was on all fours wanting to go to the cells to have a word with the pack doctor.  Cassie looked at me for a moment, before she pulled me back from my anger. “You know something, don’t you?”  My eyes went to hers.  Fuck, should I tell her what has been going on?  Cassie is my sister. Hell, she may have noticed something or even heard something. Taking a moment to study her, I looked at her. She’s not the same girl she once was. She has been a strong woman and even took on the role of guardian to mum.  Looking away from my sister, I looked at mum who was still sleeping peacefully on the couch. I didn’t want her to hear any of this. She is already going through so much and we still didn’t know what the hell the doctor was doing.  Looking back at Cassie, I motioned her to follow me into the little kitchen area. Once we were in there and the door was closed, I told Cassie what I knew but leaving out certain parts that she didn’t need to worry about, not while she was with mum. I told her about the gamma, Jenny’s parents and what the doctor slipped up from outside the door.  After a few moments, she stared ahead and shocked. “Fuck. This can’t be happening.”  She looked at me, her face full of concern. “Do you think the gamma may have given Mum something to forget?”  I shrugged, still trying to piece together when he would have come to see mum.  “Was he ever here when you were?” I asked, but Cassie shook her head.  “Not that I can remember,” she said and looked to the side, then moved to the drawer. She pulled it open and pulled something out of it—a medication bottle.  What the hell?  “These are what the doctor gave her,” she said, handing over the small bottle. “These are the ones she didn’t take.”  I took the bottle and opened it, looking at the pill. Small blue ones.  What the hell were they? I never seen them before.  “Carson,” Cassie said, making me look at her. Her eyes rounded, like she just remembered something. “I do remember something. Mum was on different medication when she started, they were white ones. These ones only were handed to her a few weeks ago.”  “When?” I asked with a frown.  Cassie stared at me, trying to piece together when but her hand flew to her mouth and looked at me. “Carson, the day Leah came here. The doctor said that mum needed stronger ones to make her feel better as she was having trouble sleeping.”  Cassie stopped and looked at me but then screamed. “Fuck!” She looked at me and then started pacing, till she stopped and looked at me again. “Carson, mum was already sleeping a lot before she had those tablets. Every time she takes those ones, she doesn’t move for hours. She just looks out cold and is hard to wake her.”  Staring at her and then back at the tablets. We needed to know what they were, and fast.  But who could we have investigate them?  With everything that has happened lately, who are we to believe and trust?  A pang of hurt rippled through my heart when it came to thinking about it. Pack members are meant to be trusted, but after what the gamma and Jenny’s parents have done, are there anymore who would side with them?  Everything was getting worse.  Come to think about it, the only thing that I hadn’t thought about for the last hour or so was Leah, who I should be thinking about more since she’s my mate, but the problem with that is, she would be coming back here soon and walking into something that could possibly kill her.  Lynx let out a growl. “We won’t let that happen.”  That part may be true but she still not safe.  A mind link opened from Zain. “The prisoner is all tied up and chained for you. I have asked him a few things, but he has said nothing. The man is hellbent on saying anything.”  “He needs to start talking,” I growled, not liking this conversation.  “He will, give me time,” Zain said, sounding pissed. “But I think you will need to leave to head to the office and help Jenny with what we brought back from the gammas. There may be something in the mess about what’s been going on.”  An image of the child in a photograph came to me.  Shit, I needed to figure out what the hell we needed to do next?  I told Zain what I wanted him to do, but only for the next hour. If the doctor wasn’t going to spill his guts in an hour. We can pick up in the morning with what to do next to him, that seemed to have perked up Lynx.  Closing the mind link down, I looked at Cassie and sighed. “I need to go. I got to go through what we found at the gamma’s place.”  Cassie nodded and then looked at the door. “I’ll stay with her. Hopefully she sleeps off whatever the pills were and tells me what has been going on.”  I smiled. “Let me know.”  Cassie nodded. “Same on your end.”  Moving away, I looked at the pills in my hand when Cassie spoke. “What about those?”  Looking up at her, I shrugged. “I’ll ask Jenny. Maybe she knows someone or even Josh.”  Cassie smiled. “Hopefully this will be all sorted and you can claim—”  I stared at her and shook my head. “Not going to go that far just yet. One thing at a time, Leah needs to be okay with what she has already witnessed.”  Cassie said nothing which I took as for me to leave, which I did but placed the pills in my pocket before leaving the room and heading out the door, only to stop to check on mum before I left.
