Chapter 88

CARSON  The last few hours had been hectic. Going over everything in the office that we found in the old gamma’s home.  Nothing made sense.  When we thought we had something, something new appeared.  The just of what we could figure out is he had been gathering what looked like evidence of what I was doing till it seemed Jenny’s parents had come to him with news about Leah. That seemed to have tipped the old man over the edge learning about Jenny’s life away from the pack and that’s when all his focus on me went out the window.  Looking up and looking at Jenny, who was sleeping on the couch in the office. She nodded off after a few hours. Papers all around her.  My eyes darted around till I saw Zain, reading over something.  We all had been in here and it was now getting late.  Part of me wanted to go and see the doctor, but it would have to wait till later this evening since it was now heading into the early hours. Zain tried to get through to the man, but he wasn’t even budging on anything. Whatever the gamma had on him, it was something that he would not let his beta in on about what the hell was happening.  Lynx moved closer and let out a huff. “Too chicken to do the right thing,” he mumbled. That could be the thing, but something wasn’t adding up.  “Somehow, I don’t think it is that simple when it comes to what is going on with him,” I murmured, looking back at Lynx, who was laying down in my head but his eyes solely on me while I continued. “He was drugging his luna from what I gathered.” That earned a low growl from him, not liking where I was going with it.  Shaking my head, I spoke softly while trying to get my point across. “There must be something in all of this that will state what the gamma has on them and then we can—”  “Carson,” Zain’s voice came, which made me stopping talking to Lynx and look back at my best friend, who was now standing before me with his face set hard. “You need to look at this,” he said, moving toward me and then handing a piece of paper to me.  Lynx came closer while I looked over the words on the page till my eyes widen and my eyebrows shoot up to my hairline when I looked back at him. “This is—”  “This is what the gamma had on the doctor,” he gritted out, which made me look at the piece of paper. There in black and white was proof the doctor was having an affair with a nurse, but it wasn’t the affair that the man exposed to him. No. Also on the page was proof, he was putting wolfs bane in something—a drink or food to his mate. He was drugging her, which would make her not feel anything or worse make her weak.  Fuck.  Anger built up but it was Zain’s next words that made my anger increase more. “There is more over in that pile. Images of pack members, older generation mainly. Things that would get them kicked out of the pack when your father was around.”  My anger bubbled more than it should, but I had to keep calm.  Shaking my thoughts away, I looked back down and knew we could use what the gamma had on the doctor against him. Lie if we had to but this ends here.  Handing back the piece of paper, I let out a shaky breath and looked at my friend. “Keep this with you. We can use it later with the doc to get some answers. If he doesn’t compile, we can banish him. Threaten him. Hell, I may kill him.”  “Do you think it will work?” he asked, cocking his head to the side.  I nodded and looked at the piece of paper again. “We won’t give any benefit of the doubt with him. What he did was messed up and needs to be seen. Also, we need a new pack doctor.”  Zain nodded and then looked over his shoulder at Jenny, who was still sleeping. “Should we tell her what—”  “Wait till later,” I said, cutting him off and making him look back at me with a frown. “We all should be asleep like Jenny. It has been a long day, and we have more to do. More to sort through with all this.” Zain looked around and let out a grunt while I continued to talk. “Also, we can round up everyone else you have found too. We can find out more with what has been going on.”  Zain nodded and let out a breath. “Have you heard from Josh?”  My stomach twists at his words, knowing it had been a few hours since the attack that followed them to where Leah was. I shook my head. “Not for hours. I may mind link to check in to see what is happening and when they are coming back here.”  Zain nodded while his face softens, while he turned to look over his shoulder again to look at Jenny. “I think having them back sooner will help her and you.” He moved back to look at me when he spoke softly. “You both need your mates here, even if you can’t tell her for another four years about what you are to her.”  Fuck, he had to rub salt into the wound that was growing when I thought about Leah.  Being seventeen is too young to know about being mates, so I will have to keep it too myself and wait till she is of age—twenty-one. The mere thought about waiting four years kills me, but I am hoping we can be on better terms. Hell, I would do anything for her.  Lynx huffed, not liking the fact we wouldn’t be able to claim her as soon as she gets here. That would have to wait, but at least we can get to know each other and even keep her safe. We needed her safe.  “Have you thought more about—” Zain started to say, but I shook my head not wanting to talk about it.  “Not going there,” I muttered, moving my eyes away from him. Not wanting to see the pain that is forming.  Theres a lot going on within the pack and thinking about Leah, it is all getting too much for me to take. Even with what has happened to my mother has had me on edge.  Zain let out a sigh, which made me come back and look at him while he spoke again, while turning to head back to where he was sitting. “I know we have to sleep but I think I will get that list together first and then we can get that started when we all have rested later this evening.”  His eyes look up when he sat and gave me a small smile. “I know you seem on edge, why not go for a run. Let Lynx out. Hell, mind link Josh to find out what is going on and ask about when they are back. You can tell him what happened with your mother and the doc too.”  I knew he was talking the truth but part of me wanted to carry on with all of this. I didn’t want to leave him with the burden of all of this.  My face may have said more when his next words came out. “Go Carson. You can’t keep reading over the same thing again.”  My eyes went to what I was reading before we spoke. It all looked double Dutch to me. Words of a rambling old man. He’s right, I needed a breather.  Taking a few moments, I looked back to my friend who was staring at me. “I’ll go.” My eyes went to Jenny while I spoke next. “Tell her if she wakes but don’t wake her till later. She needs to sleep; the boys will need her when they get up.”  Zain nodded, while I got up and walked toward the door. I headed out to get my bearings and maybe hear Josh tell me how my mate is doing, even though I want nothing more than to have her here with me.
