Chapter 91
LEAH Without looking at Josh, I handed the letter over to him I had just read. He took it, his eyes going over the letter while I looked away. While he read it, I wiped the falling tears with the back of my head. I knew my grandparents hated me but hearing them come from my own father’s writing made me wonder what I had ever done to them to act this way. Fuck, I couldn’t go back to the pack. Not after that letter. “Fuck!” Josh said, making me look at him while furrowing my brows. His eyes came to me and then knelt beside me. The letter stayed in one hand, while the other went to my shoulder. He gave me a squeeze. “We already knew something was up,” he said quietly, while I looked at him. Tala came closer, listening but still pissed off. “He knows more than he telling us.” Josh sighed. “Alpha Carson mentioned that your grandparents did something back at the pack and were placed in the cells. Not long after when the rogues came, someone freed them and they escaped.” My eyes widened till something clicked in place. “It was when I was there, wasn’t it?” Josh said nothing, only nodding. He let out a sigh and then moved from kneeling. He sat down and moved his hand away from me. His eyes darted to the other letters and then back at me. “Do you think we could read the next letter?” I frowned, wondering why the hell he was asking me. His eyes roamed over my face, just like understanding crept on his, he smiled. “Leah, I know these letters are from your father and you can take them with you,” he said, his eyes moving from me to the box in front of me. “But the next letter may tell us what he heard.” Keeping my eyes on him, I stayed quiet. This is all too much for one night, but Tala let out a sigh before she spoke. “I think he wants to know why they are acting like they are,” she said, which made me look back at her. Her eyes full of curiosity but also anger. “Let him look. Then we can head over to your friend.” Something was up with her which made me shake my head. “I’ll let him look but you need to go for a run. You need to let off some steam.” Tala’s eyes softened at my words, but it was Josh’s voice that brought me back to him. “Leah, is everything okay? I didn’t mean to be pushy or anything but there is nothing stating why your grandparents are involved or even why they have it out for you.” I gave him a small smile. “Everything’s okay. You’re not being pushy,” I said and looked to the letters. “We can read the letter but after this one, Tala needs to go for a run.” Looking back at him, a thought came to mind. “Maybe your wolf and her could go.” Josh’s eyes softened, while Tala came closer to hear him while I continued. “Most of these letters are what he was going through at the time. Things I knew, but a job he took which he learned that most of the people were werewolves—rogues.” He frowned, but I shook my head. “I’ll show you the others and even the next one. But Tala needs to get out since she has been dealing with a lot, especially reading everything. It could be—” “Leah, my wolf would love to run with Tala,” Josh said with a smile. “I think they are both on edge after the attack earlier too and with all the information you have here, it does take it out on everyone, including our wolves.” I smiled, which I believe is for first time in a long time. Josh nodded with a grin. Then his eyes went to the next letter. Letting out a shaking breath, I picked up the next one and sighed. There seemed to be a few more after this one. Maybe making this one the last one and starting the next one tomorrow when I get back. Then there was one person who I didn’t even consider in all of this—mum. Would she want to see them? Or would she go back to being controlling and wanting to take over again? That I couldn’t cope with. Shaking the racing thoughts that were running in my head, I knew I would have to deal with that when it comes to it. I needed to read the next one, see what my father had found out and hopefully we would be able to make sense of all of this. Opening the letter, I pulled it out and opened it up. This one was longer, which seemed promising. Then I started to read it out loud, so Josh could hear it. My sweet girl, I am so sorry for not writing sooner but things got out of hand here with the company I was working with. My eyes went to the date at the top and noticed that it was about three weeks after the last one. I was taking in the date, which made my stomach twist, but I went back to reading the letter. Everything blew up. Werewolves here are all wired weird. I remember your mother telling me about them before—rogues, that’s what they called them. Some would never attack unless someone paid them, not to mention they like to be on their own, but these rogues are all about money. Over the months I have worked with them, I overheard them taking bribes and even killing people. What the hell? How the hell did my father get court up in all this? As I said in the last letter, your grandparents had learned about you. Well, it seems they had someone investigate me and then had me followed, which lead them to finding out about you. Your mother never reached out. I did try but nothing. It was like she dropped off the face of the earth. Somehow that didn’t surprise me, but I wasn’t going to voice it. A wolf friend, who has been looking out for me, who also is a teacher in your school, found out about your grandparents. I asked him to help and try to find out and he sure as hell did. Your grandparents are twisted as they come, they believe a human and werewolf have anything to do with one another, especially being together, whether their moon goddess agrees. I have no idea who the moon goddess is, by the way. Your mother’s parents, which from now one I wouldn’t be calling them your grandparents anymore as I feel sick to think they would harm a child, believe if you are human, then they have the right to kill you since your mother has a new family and even more children. They are her proper family since she has a mate and moved back. Leah, they asked the rogues to keep an eye on you. Learn about you. Find out if you have the werewolf gene or human. They are to ask me questions, like a friend. Make me think they care, then when I least expect it, they should take me and kill you. Even me in the process since I have ties to your mother which is stupid since she has left us. Not the other way around. I didn’t understand any of this, but the only thing I got out of my friend and what he said and tried to understand was—there is no room in your mother’s life and if you were gone, then she would be fully committed to her mate. That’s when my stomach sank. Something made me not want to read anymore till I looked at Josh, who seemed to be all tense. He looked at me and then took the letter from me to carry on. I didn’t know if I wanted to hear anymore. My mother’s parents are deranged. Josh spoke and continued the letter, which made me look down at the box. I needed to focus on something why he spoke. There was also word your mother wanted to go back, to find me. I know that part was a lie since I knew she had found her soulmate but the way my friend said it, it sounded like your mother wanted to come back for you. He didn’t know what else was said since he was hiding behind a tree when he saw them and they moved into a building. I know you have anger towards her for what she has done, but there is more to this. Later this evening, there is a werewolf meeting and someone from your mother’s pack is coming to talk to some of the deranged rogues. My friend is going to attend and even video it for me. I may get to hear what the hell this all is about. I know I didn’t get much information about your grandparents, but when I learn more, I will tell you. Tonight, you are with Dani and Lucy, sleepover at its best and I miss you so much. Love you forever my darling girl, Dad Josh and I sat there in silence, while he placed the letter down. My eyes stayed on the letters. Picking them up, I needed something in my hands to keep my hands busy and from shaking till something caught my eyes when I held them—a USB drive. What the hell is on that? Looking at Josh, who seemed to be in his head. I touch his arm, making him jump. His eyes met mine, confused and full of concern. “Look,” I said, motioning to the USB drive in the box. Josh picked it up, while my eyes followed his every move till he looked at me. “What the hell is on this?” That was the million-dollar question.
