“No matter what happens, just keep your guard up.” The officer gave Stella a sympathetic look, then shook his head and let out a sigh.
He’d handled a lot of cases, but he’d never seen a family this tangled, or parents so cold. And now, they were about to face off against a powerhouse lawyer. He had a feeling things were going to get messy in court.
Stella nodded politely, handed over her paperwork, and stepped out of the police station.
Jackson waited in the car, while Adonis and Charlotte stood by the door. As soon as Stella came out, Adonis went over and took the file folder from her hands.
“So you’re done with the police station?” he asked.
“Yeah.” Stella smiled, her expression finally a little lighter.
Maybe it was because Charlotte had the Gates family backing her, but everything had gone surprisingly smoothly. Stella glanced over at Charlotte, who was on her phone, her eyes downcast.
“Did you find everything?” Charlotte’s voice was cool as she spoke into the phone. “Make sure you get all the proof about Mahoney’s fake insurance, the embezzlement, bribery, and cheating on bids. And don’t forget the evidence of Fedelia’s gambling and loan sharking.”
Stella blinked in shock. She hadn’t realized that family had been up to so many awful things behind closed doors. They’d even used her mother’s illness as a way to make money.
Without this evidence, Fedelia and Mahoney could have been out in just a few days.
Charlotte ended the call and came back to Stella. When she saw Stella looking a bit better, Charlotte’s lips curled into a small smile.
“The hearing’s in two days. Get some rest tonight, okay?” Charlotte reached out to gently fix a strand of Stella’s hair.
“Okay.” Stella nodded, leaning into Charlotte’s arm like a sleepy kitten. “Charlotte, everything the Adams family owns was my mom’s. They just took it for themselves.”
Charlotte nodded. “Once you get it all back, what are you going to do?”
Stella was quiet for a moment, thinking it over. When she finally spoke, her voice was soft. “I’ll donate
part of it. As for the rest… maybe you can pick someone to help manage things.”
There were so many employees, some who had been with the company for
decades. If the company went under, it would ruin their lives.
Charlotte understood, her smile gentle. “Alright.”
Over at the Adams Estate, in the living room, Fedelia and Mahoney had managed to
get bail, since their charges weren’t the worst.
Sitting across from them was a sharply dressed young man. His name was Sun. He’d gotten a scholarship to study abroad, and after finishing his studies, he’d given up his Eldoria citizenship and stayed in Apex. Now, he was a big deal in the legal world.
“Mr. Sun, are you from Eldoria?” Fedelia asked, studying him carefully.
Sun didn’t look up from his papers. He pushed his glasses up, his eyes icy as he replied, “I’m an Apex citizen now.”
His tone made it clear he wanted nothing to do with where he came from.
Fedelia forced a nervous laugh.
