Sun shot up from his seat, his face flushing red, then turning pale. He looked completely humiliated.
“As a lawyer, you’re really going to stoop to personal attacks?!”
“Personal attacks?” Charlotte leaned back against the table, lifting her chin a little. “You took public money to study abroad, then came back and betrayed your country. Am I wrong?”
“As a lawyer, you don’t fight for justice. You defend murderers for money, twisting the truth. Am I wrong?”
“You look down on Eldoria’s education and sneer at Eldoria itself, but you’ve lost to Eldoria’s lawyers again and again. Am I wrong?”
Charlotte’s eyes were cold and distant as she stared at him. “Sun, tell me. What did I say that wasn’t true?”
Sun opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He couldn’t find a single word to argue back. It almost felt like he’d just handed her his pride and asked her to crush
it.
The gallery, already fired up after what happened in the Stella case, started buzzing even louder after Charlotte finished.
“He looks down on Eldoria, but he’s happy to take our money. What a joke.”
“He got a scholarship to study abroad, then turned his back on us? And he still acts like he’s better than everyone?”
“Do lawyers not care about ethics anymore? He’ll say anything for a paycheck. People like him shouldn’t be lawyers at all.”
“Go back to Apex!”
The chatter from the crowd grew louder, all blending together into a single chant. “Get out! Get out!”
Sun heard the wave of rejection and scowled, shooting Charlotte a hard glare.
“This isn’t over.”
He slunk away, head down, while the crowd kept shouting at his back.
Once Sun left, police officers appeared. That was when it really hit Fedelia and Mahoney-the case was lost, and prison was waiting.
“Let’s go,” Stella said quietly, glancing at Charlotte.
The trial was finished for the day. With all the evidence in hand, the next hearing would be a guaranteed win.
Fedelia stared at Stella, thinking about what was coming for her and Letty. Seeing Stella smiling, ready to leave, made Fedelia’s anger boil over.
Just as Stella was about to walk away, Fedelia shot to her feet and lunged at her.
“You’re not going anywhere!”
Fedelia’s face twisted with rage. “You ruined Letty, now you want to throw us in jail? If we’re going down, you’re coming with us!”
Without hesitation, she whipped her handbag at Stella.
They were close, and Fedelia’s move was quick and vicious—the heavy bag was about to hit Stella.
Charlotte’s eyes went sharp and
cold. She was about to step in when,
out of nowhere, someone else
moved first. A tall man appeared, swinging his arm and knocking the bag aside.
The force sent the bag crashing back into Fedelia’s face.
She lost her balance and dropped to her knees, blood pouring from her nose.
Both Stella and Charlotte looked up.
A man in a crisp suit and glasses stood in front of them, blocking the way. It was Roger.
“Are you okay?”
Roger turned, his eyes landing on Stella.
Stella stared at him, clearly in shock, and just shook her head.
*She’s actually looking at me. Is she too stunned to look away?*
Roger’s lips curled into a faint, satisfied smile.
“You’ll pay for this, Stella!” Fedelia screamed as the police cuffed her.
Her clothes were splattered with blood and she looked completely defeated.
