Chapter 168

The Man Who Crawled Back.

“Let’s stay in the car. Lincoln is already helping,” Serena said, referring to the soldier.

“Yes, Miss. Besides, Lincoln already called for help. It won’t be long now,” Milo said.

“But if help doesn’t arrive soon, we could bring the pregnant lady to the hospital,” Serena said. She looked behind them, and no cars were coming. They might still be able to switch lanes in an emergency crossover section.

When Serena turned her attention back to the white sedan, her uncle and Lincoln had managed to pull a pregnant woman out of the car. Seeing that made Serena’s heart ache. She was a mother too, and she felt for the unknown woman.

The motorbike drivers started slamming their fists against the window again. Serena could not hear them clearly, but she could make out the words they were shouting.

“Open the car p>

“Open the car p>

“Open the car,” Serena instructed Milo.

Milo hesitated but did as she instructed.

“We can put her in the backseat,” Serena said, her voice shaking. She had to get

out of the car to make way for the pregnant woman.

At that point, everyone’s attention was on the unknown woman.

Milo opened the door for them.

Melvin and Lincoln were carrying the pregnant woman. The two motorbike drivers stood behind them, as if offering support.

Serena had stepped back completely.

She saw how the pregnant lady clutched onto Lincoln’s uniform. “Please, save my baby p>

Then something happened.

Lincoln suddenly stepped back, shaking his head.

He looked… dizzy.

Before Serena could react, someone had covered her mouth. Strong arms tightened around her.

“Mmmm!” Her screams were muffled by a handkerchief that smelled faintly sweet, like overripe fruit mixed with hospital antiseptic.

Serena watched in horror as everything shattered at once.

Lincoln hit the ground. Hard.

One of the motorbike drivers lunged at Milo, fists flying, while the other drove a knife straight into Melvin’s stomach.

“Serena!” Melvin gasped, his voice cracking with pain. His eyes locked onto hers, looking apologetic.

Milo roared and fought back, managing to break free, but the damage had already been done.

Strong arms yanked Serena backward.

Her feet scraped against the asphalt as she was dragged across the road.

A black van was suddenly there. She hadn’t even seen it arrive.

The sliding door flew open.

She tried to scream, tried to twist free, but whoever held her was too strong.

She was shoved inside.

The door slammed shut.

The van sped off before anyone could reach her.

Fear clawed its way into her chest — sharp and suffocating.

And just as it began to swallow her whole, darkness rushed in and took her instead.

“Wake up p>

Serena felt cold water splash over her body.

She jerked awake. Her vision was hazy, and her head hurt like hell.

“Wake up, you useless thing p>

The voice rang in her head, sending chills down her spine. ‘Why does that voice sound so familiar p>

“Ahhh!” A scream escaped her as the man clenched his hand around her cheek. “I said, wake up p>

When Serena finally focused on the person in front of her, her eyes widened in shock.

“No,” she muttered.

A tear rolled down her cheek before anger surged through her. “No! Why are you still alive p>

The person before her was… Victor Kline.

Victor no longer looked like the

wealthy patriarch she remembered. The tailored suits were gone, replaced by simple worn clothes. Its nats were unclean, and his skin Tooked weathered and dry.

But the arrogance remained.

His eyes were darker. Predatory.

“You wish were dead,” Victor said through gritted teeth. “If you and Nathaniel had not put my daughter, behind bars would not have come crawling back from the dead p>

“How-how are you still alive?” she screamed.

Serena wanted to slap Victor, kick him, or do any kind of damage, but she realized

she had been bound to a chair.

“How am I still alive?” Victor laughed. “I couldn’t stand another day in that rotten prison with Nathan pulling strings to have me beaten up p>

“And—” his face hardened. He looked like he was about to say more, but held back. Instead, he said, “I have ways. You only saw what you were meant to see p>

Serena gritted her teeth. She thought about his co-conspirators and remembered. “And Jack Spell p>

Jack Spell was the man who had facilitated her kidnapping. Serena wanted him to pay just as much as Victor.

“He was a problem that had to go,” Victor said. Then, without warning, he wrapped his hand around Serena’s neck, making her choke.

She coughed violently, twisting against the ropes as panic clawed at her lungs.

“You were supposed to serve your purpose, but what did you do?” Victor scolded. “You put my daughter behind bars, and for that, you have to make it right p>

He let go, allowing Serena to breathe.

Tears stained her cheeks as she desperately gasped for air.

She looked around and saw a group of men guarding the place. It

appeared that Serena was in an abandoned building. There were

windows in the distance. She let

see some light seeping through them and roughly make out the time. It was probably late afternoon.

“Sir, here’s the phone you asked for. This one is untraceable,” one man said, an accomplice of Victor.

“Good,” Victor said. He took pictures of Serena and sent them to someone.

Serena could only guess who he sent them to.

Her father?

Or Nathaniel?
