FAYE
Helen’s voice was calmer now.
“Let’s go again… close your eyes. Breathe,” she said softly. “Again, don’t force it… let it pass through you.”
I tried.
I really did.
I closed my eyes, focused on the steady rhythm of my breath.
Waiting.
“Again,” Helen encouraged. “Deeper this time.”
For a brief moment, everything aligned. The noise in my head softened. My heartbeat steadied.
Then-
Crash.
The sound exploded through the house, sharp and violent. Wood splintered. Glass shattered somewhere outside the room.
My eyes flew open.
Helen was on her feet instantly.
“Behind me,” she ordered–no hesitation, no fear.
Another crash followed, closer this time. The doors gave way with a brutal crack, the force of it sending a wave through the floor beneath us.
I pushed myself up, my hand instinctively going to my stomach.
The baby.
Fear surged hot and fast, and with it–Nova reacted. But I knew better.
I couldn’t shift in my condition.
My senses sharpened painfully. I could hear footsteps now. And from their scent, they were

wolves. Their heartbeats thundered in my ears, each one distinct, predatory.
Three of them burst into the room.
They didn’t bother hiding their intent.

One of them grinned when his eyes landed on me. “There she is. We’re here for the luna.”
Helen stepped forward, placing herself squarely between us. Her presence filled the space.
“You’ll go no further,” she said coolly. “Over my dead body.”
The wolves laughed. “We’re taking Faye, dead or alive.”
“Who sent you?” I asked. But they ignored me.
The first wolf lunged.
Helen moved faster than my eyes could track. Her hand snapped out, fingers curling into his throat with brutal precision. There was a sickening crack as she slammed him into the wall, his body crumpling to the floor.
I was about to move, but Helen stopped me. “Don’t fight.”
What was she saying?
The second wolf went for her from the side.
I reacted without thinking.
I grabbed the wooden stool beside me and hurled it with everything I had. Strength I didn’t know I possessed surged through my arms. The stool struck him square in the chest, knocking him back hard enough that he collided with the overturned table behind him.
He didn’t get up.
The third wolf turned toward me then, eyes gleaming.
“Careful,” he sneered. “Wouldn’t want to hurt the pup.”
They knew I was pregnant.
That was his mistake.
Nova surged again. I felt her roar inside me, lending me speed, awareness, resolve. I ducked as he lunged and delivered a kick to his gut.
He groaned.

Helen was there in an instant, her palm slamming into his chest, knocking the breath clean out of him. He collapsed to his knees, gasping.
Before either of us could speak-
Glass shattered behind us.
A fourth wolf came through the window, rolling across the floor and springing to his feet.
I barely had time to register him before he charged.
Helen intercepted him mid–stride. Their bodies collided with a force that rattled the walls. They crashed into a shelf, sending books flying.
I backed away, heart pounding, every instinct screaming at me to protect my child and fight
at the same time.
The wounded wolf tried to rise again.
I kicked him in the jaw.
Pain shot up my leg, but he went down hard, unconscious.
The fourth wolf didn’t fare much better.
Helen’s movements were precise, merciless. She twisted his arm behind his back and
slammed his head into the floor once.
Twice.
He went still.
Silence fell abruptly, broken only by my ragged breathing.
Four bodies lay scattered across the room.
Helen straightened slowly, her gaze sweeping over me first, sharp and assessing. “Are you
hurt? ”
I shook my head quickly. “No. I’m fine.”
She turned to the last wolf who was still breathing–barely alive. She crouched beside him, fingers gripping his jaw as she forced his head up.
“Who sent you?” she demanded.
He spat blood, coughing. “Doesn’t matter.”
