I leaned back in the passenger seat, arms folded loosely across my chest, staring out the window as the trees blurred past.
The silence didn’t bother me. In fact, I preferred it. Alexander wasn’t exactly the chatty type, and I didn’t come along for small talk.
I had planned to ask him some questions on the way about the painting thing… just to get to know more about that side of him, but I was no longer in the mood to ask. And I was sure he
wasn’t in the mood either.
Still, I could feel his glances. Those quiet, heavy looks he thought went unnoticed.
Finally, his voice cut through the quiet.
“You’re not going to ask?”
I blinked, turning my head toward him. “Ask what?”
“What Bella and I talked about.” His tone was smooth, but it was like he’d been waiting for the question and was almost… disappointed it hadn’t come.
I raised an eyebrow, then shrugged. “Why would I ask?”
The corner of his mouth twitched, but not quite into a smile.
“I mean,” I went on, pretending I wasn’t curious. Of course I was curious, but I knew my place. “it doesn’t concern me, so I don’t need to know,” I added.
He glanced at me again, smirking like he could see through me. “You’re sure you don’t mind?”
There it was again–that subtle probing, like he wanted me to bite. Like he wanted me to press, to dig, to show that I cared.
I smirked too. “Why do I feel like you really want me to ask? Just so you can feel like I care?”
Alexander’s hands stayed steady on the wheel, his shoulders relaxed. “Every normal person would be curious,” he said finally.
Ah. There it was.
“Are you trying to say I’m not normal?” I shot back, turning my head sharply to catch his expression.

I sat in silence for a moment, chewing on my lip, then decided I wasn’t about to let him think he’d unsettled me. If he wanted a reaction, fine–I’d give him one. Just not the one he expected. So, with deliberate casualness, I tilted my head and said, “Bella’s like your sister, right? So, I’m guessing it was just a normal little chat between siblings.” That got him. His hands stilled on the wheel for a second, but I caught it. The faintest freeze before he glanced at me like he was trying to decide if I was joking or if I was saying what he thought I was saying. I only smiled, smug, and turned to face the road again. “How long have you known?” he asked at last. Bingo. I let out a small laugh. “Do you mean how long I’ve known that you and Bella are… lovers?” He didn’t flinch at the word. Didn’t deny it. He just said, “Yes.” I took my time before answering. “It wasn’t exactly difficult to figure out. The way she behaves around you, and the way she tries to get to me every time, like we’re in some kind of contest, it makes it clear enough. But I wasn’t completely sure until a few days ago.” I didn’t tell him the exact day. No need to hand him that detail on a silver platter. For a moment, the silence stretched between us again, thicker than before. He looked like he wanted to say something…his lips parted slightly, his jaw tensed…but nothing came out. He didn’t even try to deny it, or offer explanation. And I didn’t know how that made me feel. On one hand, I should’ve been relieved. Our relationship was nothing more than a political and business arrangement, after all. It wasn’t like I had the right to care who he warmed his bed with. On the other hand… there was something unsettling about how comfortable he seemed with me knowing. As if it didn’t matter to him at all that I’d seen through the carefully constructed façade, as if Bella’s place in his life was so solid it didn’t even warrant secrecy anymore. 2/4 Chapter 65 +25 Points That thought sat uneasily in my chest, but I swallowed it down. No use thinking too hard about it. The rest of the ride was quiet again, and I let it stay that way, resisting the urge to ask further questions. When the car finally slowed, I leaned forward, peering through the windshield. A police station. I blinked, then turned to him sharply. “A police station?” Alexander parked, killed the engine, and nodded as though it were the most normal thing in the world. He stepped out of the car without elaborating. I followed quickly, falling into step beside him. My eyes flicked up at the weathered brick building, the faded sign above the entrance, the officers milling about in standard–issue uniforms. It looked like… well, a regular police station. Ordinary. Which only made it all the more absurd. I frowned. “You’ve got to be kidding me. You have humans investigating werewolf business? How the hell did you even explain the situation to them?” Alexander’s lips curved into the faintest hint of amusement, like he thought it was funny.” Relax. The person in charge here is one of us. And not just him–a couple of other officers, too. They know how to handle it.” I paused, chewing on his words. That… made sense, actually. Clever, even. Having wolves embedded in the human system of that nature meant resources, cover, plausible deniability. Still, I wasn’t about to admit out loud that I found it impressive. I crossed my arms and muttered, “Convenient.” He only smirked and pushed open the door, holding it long enough for me to step inside. Now that I was paying attention, I caught the faint vibration of wolf energy. It was subtle, controlled, but undeniably there. Alexander wasn’t kidding. 5 Comments Vote 815
