Chapter 89

CARSON  Stepping outside, I let Lynx push me back and let him take over fully. Shifting into his true form, he stood tall and shook out his fur till he let out a howl.  A few howls could be heard throughout the pack, mostly pack members who were awake at this hour.  Staying close, I watched Lynx take off sprinting into the forest with no care in the world. He zipped in and around trees, letting the nights air skim over him like a blanket.  Neither one of us spoke. Too many things were running around in our heads. Well, mostly I did. Lynx was happily chasing a rabbit around and getting lost in the feeling of not being an alpha for a while.  My mind raced over everything we had found in the old gammas house. Most of it was ramblings, but there was a part of me that made me wonder why the sudden change in what he started to do. He went through a lot of trouble to get intel on pack members. Things that could have them sent into a cell or even worse banish from the pack.  Everything was getting to me, which made Lynx stop his chase and let out a frustrated sigh. “Mind link Josh. He probably knows why he would be doing something like that. Hell, involve mate’s uncle too.”  Lynx was right, I had to ask him. He was the man I went to when I had issues when my father passed away.  Taking a moment to clear my racing thoughts, I open a mind link to Lucian and Josh. “Hey, how are things going?” I asked, trying to sound casual but it may have come out more forced.  “Everything is going to plan,” Lucian said, sounding a little excited. “But we do have a situation.”  Frowning and not liking where this was going, I had to ask. “What kind of situation?”  Lucian sighed but it was Josh who spoke next. “Well, we will have to bring two humans back with us and a wolf.”  Hearing that made my jaw set and grind my teeth and Lynx growl. “What do you mean two humans and a wolf?”  Josh started to explain what happened. The wolf was someone who wanted to help and knew Leah’s father but wouldn’t say what only he had to protect her. That part made my anger swirl around that another man was around my mate.  But the most surprising thing was learning the woman, Leah knows and is her best friend’s mother is Lucian’s mate which was a surprise to me. But knowing what his parents have been like toward humans, I wonder if they would accept her into the family. That would never happen now, especially with everything they have done already.  After Josh was done and Lucian started to tell me what his mate was like, which had me trying not to laugh that she wants nothing to do with him. Not to mention the daughter he would be gaining too, I wanted to know more about my mate and these two ladies seemed to know more than anyone.  Lucian left the mind link, something about seeing if everyone needed anything. But when he left, Josh let out laugh. “His mate is sassing him which he seems to like, all too much.”  I let out a laugh and quieten down to ask the question that has been on my mind since I got hold of them.  “How’s Leah?” I asked, which made the mind link go quiet suddenly.  That didn’t make this a whole lot better.  My heart started to race, wondering if there was an issue which Josh seemed to pick up on. “Nothing is wrong,” he stated, matter of factly but there was a slight quiver in his tone which I couldn’t place till he let out a sigh. “After having to talk to the man and getting her friend with her mum to leave, Leah needed a moment which was fine but soon realised that her father had left her a handful of letters and photos.”  That got my attention. “What’s in them?”  “I don’t know and I don’t think I am the right person to ask,” he said, something again appeared in his tone which I knew I had to stop what I was going to ask. Maybe she can show me when she comes back here.  Josh let out a shaky breath before he spoke again. “Okay, you asked us and know what’s going on here, and before you ask, we will be leaving in the morning. Lucian will be checking around the area before we leave to make sure there are no rogues following us back.”  That part made me happy, but it was what I had to tell him next that I wasn’t too thrilled with.  “Come on, Carson,” he said, knowing full well what I am like. “I can feel the tightness through the link from here. What’s going on?”  I let out a shaky breath and explained everything. From what we found in the old gamma’s house to what Zain had found in the stack of papers. The bribes he had on people within the pack. I told him everything.  Anger swept through the link, making mine spike. “That old fart,” he growled, which made me hold my breath. I didn’t even know if I wanted to laugh or be pissed, but it was the name he called the old man and continued. “He was a stuck-up old git who thought the old ways was always perfect, especially for the treatment they would put toward any humans.”  He stopped for a moment and then spoke again. Making me tense at his next words. “You do know he was always against Jenny coming back here, just like her parents.”  That I didn’t know. But knowing what we know now, it doesn’t surprise me. “When he learned about Jenny falling in love with a human,” I could feel the tension in his voice when he brought it up, but it was what he said next had me wondering where his feeling was now. “And having a human child, it sent him over the edge.”  I said nothing.  “Carson, whatever he is planning doesn’t sound good but maybe with the people he has things on,” he said, sounding like he had a plan in mind and knowing him, he would. “Maybe exchange their freedom instead of banishment. Show the pack members what kind of alpha you truly are by showing compassion.”  I stayed quiet, letting his words wash over me.  “Not only that, but we can also aim to make a plan on how to deal with them when I get back,” he stated, continuing.  “Okay, but there is something else I should tell you,” I muttered, knowing I had to tell him what the doc had been doing with my mother. I explained what happened, even what the old gamma had on him and where the doc was.  A loud growl erupted through the link. “Son of a bitch. I should have known he had something on that fool. I always had a feeling about the guy when he was around.” He took a few moments before he continued. “Don’t confront him just yet. I want a crack at him. Even Lucian can too. We may know a way of getting him to open and even spilling.”  Not liking the idea but knew he would get him to talk with what was going on. “Okay, but you better not be too late getting back and if you are, I will deal with him myself.”  That was more like a promise than a threat, but the way I was feeling deep inside it could have been either one.  Josh and I spoke some more before he had to leave to make sure Leah was okay. He had left her to read the letters on her own.  Once the link was closed, I closed my eyes to let everything settle inside me while Lynx had been quiet the entire time we were talking.  Josh had given us a lot to think about and that’s what we were going to do. But an image of Leah came to mind, which made us even more confused. What the hell were we going to do when she came back? I needed a plan on how to deal with this and not confront her with what we are to her. Not until she was old enough.
