Chapter 125
As though realizing what that meant, Jake froze and his breath caught. His stomach dropped to his feet.
“Oh… shit p>
The word slipped out of him in a whisper. Then louder.
“Oh, shit p>
He pushed both hands into his hair.
“You idiot,” he hissed to himself. “What the hell were you thinking? Two weeks? Two damn weeks? Why weren’t you paying attention? Why didn’t you ask again? Why didn’t you check with the doctor after that p>
He swore again, louder this time.
“I’m such a stupid p>
He caught himself before the word finished but the sentiment stayed heavy in his chest.
Because the reality was settling in now:
He had no idea if there had been a window.
No idea if there had been a chance.
No idea if he had messed up, not Bella.
And suddenly… the certainty he’d been screaming about hours ago started feeling shaky.
He tried to sleep that night. He truly did.
But sleep was nowhere near him.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Bella’s hurt face and how disappointed she’d been when she told him, “You’re just like everyone else,” with so much pain in her voice.
By 3 a.m., he sat on his bed, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor as the weight of his guilt grew heavier and heavier.
By 4 a.m., he knew he wouldn’t survive the day without answers.
By 5 a.m., he had already called for his jet and by 6 a.m., he was in the air to Florittle to get the answers he needed.
His chest tightened as the city came into view from the plane window. The closer he got, the more nauseous guilt twisted inside him.
He should’ve just called the doctor. He could’ve emailed. Could’ve sent a message. But he needed to ask him this face-to-face.
Because he needed certainty. He needed facts. He needed the truth so he knew how to fix things.
And because deep down… he feared the truth might be something he never wanted to face.
When he walked into the hospital, the staff stared. He didn’t care. His only focus was the long corridor leading to the familiar door.
He approached the receptionist. “I need to see Dr. Ferdinand,” he said.
She blinked in surprise. “Do you have an appointment, Mr p>
“Jake Stones p>
Her eyes widened in surprise, recognition kicking in. “O-Of course. Please wait a moment p>
She made a quick call, whispered, then hung up. Follow current novᴇls on
“You may go in,” she said.
Jake pushed open the door to Dr. Ferdinand’s office.
Doctor Ferdinand stood from his desk immediately, surprise written all over his face.
“Jake? My goodness. It’s been years. I couldn’t believe when my secretary called. Is everything alright? Are you okay p>
Jake closed the door behind him, his expression exhausted, drained, and tense.
“I’m… physically fine,” he said slowly. “But I need to ask you something. And I need you to be completely honest with me p>
Ferdinand frowned. “Of course. What is it p>
Jake swallowed hard.
“Is there—” He paused, steadying his breath. “Is there a possibility… any possibility at all… that I could impregnate someone after the vasectomy p>
The doctor blinked.
Then he shook his head.
“No. Not unless the sex happened within the first three months after the procedure.” He said it so casually, so matter-of-factly, that Jake felt the ground tilt beneath him.
Jake’s brows furrowed sharply. “What p>
Dr. Ferdinand tilted his head. “Why do you look so confused? I explained it to you before the procedure p>
“No,” Jake said, voice tight. “You didn’t p>
The doctor frowned deeper. “Jake, I did. I always explain it. I told you the first three months are the danger zone because existing sperm can still be present. I remember telling you to abstain. I specifically said it but you’d said I shouldn’t worry that you didn’t have anyone to engage in the act with the doctor was saying but Jake had already zoned out.
His ears rang and the room felt suddenly too small.
“Jake?” the doctor called, concerned. “Are you listening p>
Jake blinked, bringing his attention back to Doctor Ferdinand and then he cussed under his breath, low, furious, and self-directed.
“Damn it p>
The doctor looked startled.
Jake pushed a trembling hand through his hair.
“So there was a chance,” he whispered, voice cracking. “There was actually a chance p>
“If intercourse happened in the first three months, yes,” Ferdinand confirmed. “That’s why I gave you the instructions so firmly. Jake, why are you asking this after five years? Did something go wrong? Do you need me to run some tests p>
Jake shut his eyes for a long moment, thinking. When he opened them, pain filled every inch of his expression.
“Oh my God. I think He swallowed, voice barely above a whisper. “I think I just made the biggest mistake of my life p>
The doctor straightened. “Jake p>
“I can’t waste time explaining everything.” Jake’s voice was rough, emotional. “But I messed up. God, I messed up so badly p>
He stood up and turned, heading for the door.
“Jake!” the doctor called after him. “If this is about a child p>
“I know,” Jake said quietly, his hand on the door. “I know. That’s why I came p>
And without another word, he walked out, guilt choking his throat and a singular truth crushing him:
He might have hurt the one person he shouldn’t have.
And now? He didn’t know how to face her. He didn’t know how to fix what he’d broken.
All he knew was that he’d been wrong. Very, very wrong.
And Bella… Bella had every right not to forgive him.
