Chapter 30

[Music: Drive You Insane By Daniel Di Angelo]

I didn’t move because it seemed as if my legs were stapled there. I swallowed a lump in my throat when he towered over me.

“Are you sure that’s the only reason?” he asked in a ragged whisper. “If there is… Tell me p>

There was a power in his voice that made my pulse race, and I was this close to spilling every secret I have.

I clenched the file tightly against my chest. “She’s asking questions, looking into my background. She wants to know what our relationship is really about p>

“Anything else p>

I shuddered. “No p>

I kept my eyes pinned on him, unwavering, silently praying he wouldn’t ask more than this.

“I’ll handle it p>

“G-Good.” I turned to leave, but he stopped me again.

“Are you avoiding me p>

“No! Why would I p>

He held my chin captive so that my eyes were suddenly on his.

“You’re a ghost in my office p>

“I’m working p>

“We’re both working,” he countered. “Tell me what’s on your mind p>

“There’s nothing on my mind p>

“Are you sure p>

He’s speaking more than usual and asking a lot of questions. I don’t know if I should feel good or worried about it.

“Yes p>

He brushed my chin before he released it. The lingering ghostly feel of his touch overwhelmed me, but I did my best to shove it.

“You didn’t have breakfast, so we’ll do lunch.” He checked his Rolex. “In five minutes. Is that enough to file those p>

I stroked a stiff nod only, following behind when he stepped into his office.

I walked to my desk to round up my work, setting the papers down and taking out the files. My eyes briefly flashed to Ares, and he was watching me.

He reclined in the leather chair, rocking gently, one hand on the armrest, and his thumb stroking his jaw.

I cleared my throat, going back to work, hoping I could zone him out, but I couldn’t shake that cold focus.

I shivered, sluggish even though I was on the clock, and it took forever to file these papers.

“Is my signature needed?” he asked.

“Yes p>

“Then come here p>

That unexplainable feeling coiled my insides, and on autopilot, I pushed to my feet and walked to him.

“Closer p>

I swallowed a lump in my throat and rounded his table and dropped the file. “Sign here and—” I flinched when I felt his hand at the back of my thigh, his fingers brushing the smooth area.

“Mr. King,” I whispered.

“Yes p>

“Y-Your signature p>

It took a second before he took his pen and signed where I pointed, and the moment he did the last, I quickly gathered them and hurried back to my desk.

“Ready p>

I nodded only as I walked to grab my coat from the hanger, amidst trying not to be too close to him.

I caught a brief smile on his lips as I chose to walk ahead of him.

But Ares had something else in mind, his hand pinned on the small of my back like a magnet as we made our way through the ballpen and into the elevator.

Being in this box with him felt like another recipe for disaster, but I struck up a conversation this time.

“I never said thank you for finding the ring. I didn’t expect you to.” I cast a look at his side profile. “I thought Ares King could replace it p>

“You didn’t want it replaced p>

His reply was simple and direct, yet it meant a great deal.

When he stayed back in the car, I thought he was off to his private business, but he really went back to that estate.

He spent the entire night looking for it?

This had been on my mind since yesterday, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Why would Ares King do something like that?

I mindlessly stroked the ring on my finger, unable to take my eyes off him. Slowly, he veered his to me, and a connection was made, and we both didn’t look away.

His blues were icy and impassive, yet I dawdled, not until the elevator made a soft ding and the doors slid open.

We stepped out, eyes flying to us until we made our way out of the revolving doors.

I caught sight of a black Lamborghini with no other cars in sight.

“We’ll ride in this?” I asked in awe.

“Yes.” He rounded me to the passenger side and lifted the car door for me.

“And you’re driving p>

“Yes,” he reprised, amused.

I sighed, getting in, eyes tracking Ares’ movement until he got in.

“It looks good for the public,” he added.

Right.

He pressed the button, and the engine roared to life. I quickly strapped my seat belt on, and when he caught that, one of those rare smiles of his, revealing those mesmerizing dimples formed.

“Scared p>

“I’m not good with fast things p>

“Interesting. Do you want me to alter that notion p>

“What—no!” I sucked in breath when he sped out. “Oh my god!” I panicked when the streets blurred.

I shot him a glare and saw he was enjoying this. This fucking devil!

I yelped when Ares shifted into a higher gear and the engine roared, but not on the same frequency as my panic.

Ares slowed down for a second, turning the wheels with one hand, and it was the hottest sight I have ever seen.

I rasped, leaning back as Ares blurred through the road, passing cars like he had gone turbo.

Look, I’m a Fast and the Furious fan, but I do not want to live it!

“Okay, I get it! You’re a hot driver p>

“Hot? You think I’m hot p>

“Ares!” I snapped, looking at him as he made a sharp turn toward another road where there was little traffic.

The car came to an abrupt stop, and my body leaned forward; thankfully, my seatbelt saved me.

I breathed heavily through my nose before I glared at him. My heart skipped a beat when I caught sight of the desire that sat on the surface.

Was he fucking enjoying my fright?

His eyes dipped to my lips, staying there for far too long, and in a heartbeat, I took off my seatbelt and saddled him, mouth crashing against his in a ravenous lock.
