It was late outside the police station, the light fading as a cool breeze swept through the night. Andrew, Parrish, and Shirley stood in a tight row, shoulder to shoulder. All six eyes were glued to Charlotte, who stood a little way off, her face unreadable.
Parrish nudged Andrew. “So, what’s up with Charlotte and Anthony?” he asked, keeping his voice low.
Andrew frowned, looking just as thrown as Parrish. “Honestly, I’ve never seen Anthony even touch a woman before,” he mumbled, like he was still trying to process it.
Parrish clicked his tongue, eyes narrowing. “You think Anthony actually likes her?” He glanced at Charlotte, then back at Andrew. “Last time it was in the office, now it’s here at the station… It’s like he keeps showing up whenever she needs someone.”
Andrew just stared at him, almost offended by the idea. “Come on. He’s only met her a couple of times. There’s no way he likes her. Maybe he just saw she was hurt and decided to play the gentleman for once.”
Parrish grinned and folded his arms, eyes never leaving Charlotte. “Maybe. But you gotta admit, they actually look good together. Their vibe just matches, you know?”
Andrew hesitated, then glanced at Charlotte, studying her from the corner of his eye. The idea of the two people he feared most teaming up made something cold crawl down his spine. He shivered. “Can you not say things like that?” His voice cracked. “Seriously, it’s scary to even think about.”
Shirley propped her chin on her hand, her voice quiet and thoughtful. “I don’t know… I kind of think Charlotte likes Anthony too. The way they act around each other, it just feels so natural. Like they’ve known each other forever.”
That thought made Andrew’s heart skip a beat. Before he could say anything, a tall, dark figure strode toward them. Without even glancing their way, Anthony walked straight to Charlotte, slipping his coat over her shoulders and gently taking her hand. Charlotte, who usually couldn’t stand anyone getting close, just let him. She looked almost sweet, letting Anthony lead her away without a single complaint.
The three of them just stared, completely shell-shocked. It felt unreal, like they were watching two totally different people.
Andrew’s face twisted, like he was about to be sick.
Anthony glanced over at them. “Hans, take them home,” he said, his tone cool. “And get a new place set up for the girl and her grandma.”
Hans nodded. “Yes, Anthony.”
They could only watch in stunned silence as Anthony opened the car door for Charlotte, helped her into the passenger seat, and then drove off, his taillights disappearing into the night.
Parrish gaped at the empty spot
where the car had been. “Did you see that? Charlotte got to sit in the passenger seat! Andrew, they’re totally together. There’s no way they’re not.”
He remembered hearing about that one actress who tried to get close to Anthony Anthony, had her
blacklisted, and someone smashed her car in public. After that, nobody even dared to breathe near him.
So that passenger seat? It wasn’t just a seat. In Parrish’s mind, it was practically a
throne reserved for Anthony’s future wife.
Andrew crouched down on the sidewalk, looking like his whole world had just collapsed. “Just stop. Please. Both of you.”
Shirley watched him, her expression softening. She crouched beside him and gave his arm a gentle squeeze. “Hey it’s okay if you want to cry, just let it out. You’ll feel better”
