After she left, admissions kept moving forward like nothing had happened.
In Eleanor’s office, tension hung in the air. Shirley’s decision to drop out of early admissions made sense. She just wanted to be one of Mr. Lane’s students. But Charlotte… When Eleanor heard Charlotte had turned down The Cabinda University, she almost lost it.
“Come on, tell me. Why?” Eleanor sat in her chair, clinging to an empty teacup, her glare fixed on Charlotte.
Charlotte stood there with her hands behind her back, looking sweet and innocent.
“What’s with the silence?” Eleanor pressed.
Charlotte just smiled a little, then poured her a glass of water. “Here, have a sip first.”
Eleanor was thrown off. She took the glass, a little awkward, and muttered, “Don’t think you can charm your way out of this. If you can’t give me a real reason, I’ll knock some sense into you.”
Charlotte grinned. “You can try, but it won’t do much for your reputation.”
Eleanor’s cheeks turned pink. She couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, enough with the attitude.”
“Okay.” Charlotte lifted an eyebrow. “The only reason I enrolled at Vanguard High was to take the standard entrance exams.”
She had promised herself she’d fulfill the dreams of the friends she’d lost in the sanatorium. Otherwise, she could have gotten into college two years ago through interviews.
“I never planned to accept an offer through interviews. The only reason I showed up was to make you proud.” Charlotte’s eyes glimmered with mischief. “So, Eleanor, how does it feel to have two of your students getting offers from the top universities?”
Eleanor paused, blushing again. “Honestly? Pretty great.” She let out a sigh though, her brows knitting together. “But it feels like a misse ce. just hope you do as well on exams.”
“It is a bit of a shame.” Charlotte’s eyes narrowed playfully. “To make up for letting you and the literature teacher down, I’ll bring an extra pen to the next exam.”
Wait, what? Did that mean she’d ace literature too? Charlotte always kept her promises. Was Eleanor about to have a student with perfect scores in every subject?
Charlotte left the office and barely got down the hallway before Olivia, her face streaked with tears, stormed over and blocked her way.
“The piano competition,” Olivia spat, “did you tell the teachers on purpose?”
Charlotte stopped and looked at her, her expression turning icy, lips curling into a cool smile. “Yeah. I did it on purpose.”
“You couldn’t make it into The
Cabinda University yourself, so you
got jealous when they picked me. You couldn’t stand it, so you did this. So dirty!” Olivia’s voice shook with anger, her fists clenched so hard her knuckles went white. If she stood chance, she would have thrown a punch.
Charlotte looked her right in the eye. “I didn’t choose The Cabinda University because it’s beneath me You didn’t get in because you just aren’t good enough. Her voice was cold. “You got caught plagiarizing. You had it coming.”
“Charlotte, what do you even get out of this?”
Charlotte shrugged, her face unreadable and voice like ice. “I’m satisfied. That’s
what you get for crossing me.”
Olivia watched Charlotte walk away, her teeth clenched in rage, her eyes burning with hate.
