Anthony didn’t say a word. His sharp, handsome face was shadowed, dark eyes locked on Charlotte, his mood more stormy than anyone could handle.
A match made in heaven? Please. She really had the guts to say that out loud.
“This is the sweet girl I told you about,” Lavinia said, catching Anthony watching Charlotte. She reached for Charlotte’s hand, giving her an affectionate squeeze. “Charlotte already agreed to be my goddaughter.”
Anthony stayed quiet.
“Didn’t you always say you wanted a little sister when you were a kid?” Lavinia was beaming, her excitement spilling over. “Well, now you have one. Charlotte is your sister from now on.”
No one said a thing. Anthony was silent. Charlotte was silent. Andrew just stood there, not making a sound.
Suddenly, the room felt frozen, like time had stopped. The tension was so thick, it made no sense.
Lavinia glanced at their strange faces, replayed what she’d just said in her head… Did she mess up? She really didn’t think so.
“Sister?” Anthony finally spoke, his lips curving into a slow, dangerous smile. His tone was casual, but there was a warning in it. “Are you sure you want her to be my sister?”
“Charlotte is amazing,” Lavinia insisted, thinking Anthony was being picky. “She saved your dad and me during that accident, remember? And she’s the top student at Vanguard High. Why shouldn’t she be your sister?”
She looked over at Andrew, who was pale and silent. “Besides, Charlotte and Andrew are a couple, so sooner or later—”
“Ma’am!” Andrew blurted out, eyes wide with panic. “You’ve got it wrong. Charlotte and I aren’t together. We’re just classmates, that’s all.”
“What? You’re not dating?” Lavinia looked a little lost, whispering more to herself,
“You brought her to the family dinner, I thought you two were close.”
And the way he draped his coat over Charlotte… Anyone would jump to
conclusions. No wonder she wanted to play matchmaker.
“Oh, I see. Sorry, Charlotte.” Lavinia turned to her with an apologetic smile. “But it doesn’t matter. You’re still my goddaughter.”
Charlotte blinked and awkwardly tucked her hair behind her ear, not sure what to say. She opened her mouth, but Anthony jumped in before she could get a word out.
“She’s not going to be your goddaughter either,” he said, his voice cold as ice.
“What?” Lavinia frowned, clearly annoyed. “Why not? I want Charlotte as my goddaughter. What’s your problem?”
“It’s just not right.”
“How is it not right?” Lavinia was getting worked up, holding tighter to Charlotte’s hand. “She’s younger than you, so what? You’re bold enough to date girls who are

eighteen, but your sister can’t be a little younger?”
“Your opinion doesn’t matter. I’m making Charlotte my goddaughter no matter what ” Lavinia sounded unshakable. She glanced at Matthew, who had just walked in, and pouted, “Matthew, do you want a goddaughter?”
