“Sorry, that’s for my sister.” Donald’s face clouded over as he watched Charlotte help herself without asking. His voice was chilly. “Please don’t touch things that aren’t yours.”
Charlotte just smiled, her eyes full of mischief. She said she understood, but her hands kept moving. She tore open the bag of chips and started munching happily.
Donald couldn’t even find the words to respond.
“If you want me to agree to your request, it’s not impossible,” Charlotte said, crunching on a chip. She sounded way too cheerful for someone who was negotiating. “But I want everything I asked for, not a single thing missing.”
She meant every formula he had.
If he handed everything over now, what would he have left to convince her to come back and train his soldiers in the future?
“Reaver, you can’t just take advantage of me like this,” Donald said with a bitter laugh, trying hard to keep his anger in check.
“I think I totally can. Give it a few minutes, you might be the one chasing after me, begging to hand them over.”
Donald scoffed. “Keep dreaming.”
He could maybe give her some formulas, but all of them? No way. This wasn’t a negotiation. It felt more like a shakedown.
“Reaver, you should go.” Donald sat down on the couch and stared at her, his eyes cold, his tone even colder.
Charlotte didn’t budge. Instead, she quietly unwrapped a piece of candy and popped it into her mouth.

That meant Lottie really was Reaver.
He remembered thinking her fighting style felt just like Reaver’s when they sparred. He’d thought he was imagining things. He’d even been planning to ask Reaver to train. herself.
Donald didn’t know whether to laugh or be completely frustrated.

Donald felt a sharp pang of guilt.
If he’d paid more attention back then, maybe he could have brought her home sooner.
“I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I didn’t mean for any of that to happen.”
“I know Charlotte twirled the lollipop stick between her fingers, her voice low. “But
if you’d give me all the formulas you have, I think I could finally let it go.”
Donald watched her, that sly kitten smile on her face, and realized what she’d said earlier. Lottie had been planning her payback for two years.
She really didn’t pull any punches.
