Charlotte’s words rang out so confidently that Shirley, standing off to the side, couldn’t help but flash her a silent thumbs-up.
Letty needed a moment to collect herself after being called out so bluntly. She pressed her lips together, clearly angry but still trying to look composed.
But Carmelita, standing behind Letty, couldn’t stay quiet. “Charlotte, this is their family’s business. Who are you to get involved? Seriously, who do you think you are?”
Charlotte just smiled, clearly amused. “If you want, I could be your mom.”
Shirley actually laughed out loud before quickly covering her mouth, pretending she hadn’t made a sound. Charlotte really had a talent for putting people in their place.
Carmelita’s face went ghostly pale and she looked like she was about to argue back. But before she could take a step, Charlotte’s voice floated over again, icy and unconcerned.
“I have no right to butt in? Then why are you getting involved? Is it your business? Why are you making so much noise?”
The people around them drew in sharp breaths, watching the drama unfold.
Carmelita opened her mouth to argue but couldn’t get a word out. She looked even worse than before.
“Charlotte, don’t push it,” Letty finally said, her eyebrows knitting together.
“I’m pushing it. So what? What are you going to do about it?” Charlotte shot back, her tone cool as ever. She glanced over at Shirley, who was struggling not to laugh, and nodded. “Let’s go.”
Shirley nodded right away, her face lighting up as she hurried after Charlotte, sneaking a happy look at the crowd left standing there in shock.
Watching Charlotte walk away so confidently, Letty’s face stung. It felt like she’d just been slapped, burning hot and impossible to ignore. She’d never been treated like this at school, never made to feel so invisible.
Carmelita was furious. “Letty, Charlotte’s family went bankrupt. She’s got no background, nothing to rely on. And she’s just a traditional medicine student Eventually shell have to deal with you. By then, she’ll realize what a mistake she made crossing you.”
Sarah jumped in too. “Isn’t Kingswood University’s freshman class coming to The Cabinda University for an academic exchange next Monday? If I’m not mistaken, you’re the one running it, right?”
Letty nodded. On the surface, it was
just an academic event. In reality, it was a chance for the Medical
Alliance to scout out which freshmen were worth nurturing. Every student who got to participate would take it seriously making sure to be on their best behavior.
Carmelita hooked her arm through Letty’s and tried to sound sweet. “Letty, you should have seen how much of a show-off Charlotte was during physical training If it weren’t for her, dante never would’ve gotten in trouble.”
At the mention of Janie, Letty’s eyes grew cold. It was true. Without Charlotte, there’s no way Stella would have had the guts to get a lawyer and sue Janie.
“Letty, Janie’s innocent. You have to help her out,” Carmelita said, piling on. “You should get Charlotte kicked out of Kingswood University. Let her feel what Janie went through.”
Kingswood’s traditional medicine program was nothing compared to The Cabinda University’s modern medicine, but if any of their students messed up during the exchange, it would drag down the whole school’s reputation.
“That’s right!” piped up someone from the group, clearly one of Letty’s fans. “If she dares disrespect Letty, she deserves to be taught a lesson.”
“Letty, put them in their place.”
