Adonis sat with his arms folded, one leg bouncing as he stared at the seats on the screen. “All this showy stuff is pointless,” he grumbled under his breath. “If they really wanted to help, they should’ve just sent cash.”
Money was definitely Charlotte’s favorite thing.
“Hold on…” Suddenly, something clicked in Adonis’s mind. He stopped, leaned in close to Charlotte, and lowered his voice. “Charlotte, don’t tell me this is from some secret admirer?”
A secret admirer?
Charlotte’s fingers paused above her phone. For a moment, she just sat there, silent. Then she smiled, her lips curving in that way that always turned heads. “Well, if that’s true, he’s got pretty good luck.”
What was that supposed to mean?
Adonis stared at her, confused, until the realization hit him.

Jackson didn’t say a word.
After the accident earlier, both men were on edge, scanning every inch of the venue. They took up positions on either side of Charlotte, basically forming a human shield.
But Charlotte? She just sat there, cool as ever, not the slightest hint of panic on her face. Nothing seemed to bother her.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
She glanced down and saw two new messages.
Anthony: Lottie, good luck.
Charlotte smiled to herself, closed the chat, and switched over to Dr. David’s social media.
There was a voice message waiting.
Dr. David: Lottie, I’m in Solenia.
He sounded so down, so lost.
In Solenia? Charlotte’s brows drew together. According to the schedule, Dr. David was supposed to be in Cabinda, deep in his research on the “B20” project.
Before she could process it, another voice note popped up.
Dr. David: Lottie, can you believe they basically kidnapped me? I was just finishing up work, having a smoke by the dumpster, and then suddenly a sack goes over my head. Next thing I know, I wake upon a plane to Solenia.
The Vice President of the International Medical Alliance, kidnapped and flown across the world?
Charlotte let out a long sigh and rubbed her forehead.
Dr. David: These people are unreal! Apparently, someone important has to give out the final award, but everyone else is out of the country. Lloyd didn’t want the hassle so guess who gets stuck with it? Mer What, do they think my schedule’s wide open? That I don’t get annoyed?
His rant was picking up steam. Charlotte blinked, then quietly pulled the phone away from her ear and just let him vent.
Dr. David: And now I’m supposed to give you your award? Like I’m some big deal… Do I even deserve that?
He was catching on. Everyone else had probably ducked out just to avoid risking embarrassment in front of Lottie.
“Alright, that’s enough,” Charlotte said, her voice light and easy. “The competition’s about to start. You must be exhausted from traveling. Go get some rest.”
Dr. David: I am completely wiped. I didn’t even get dinner after leaving the lab. They shoved two slices of bread at me and called it a day.
Charlotte pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh. “Once we’re back in Cabinda, dinner’s on me.”
Dr. David didn’t answer right away.
Charlotte added, “How about The Oak & Vine?”
Fine, Dr. David finally replied, his
voice trailing off into a yawn. The anger in his messages faded,
replaced by a hint of pride.
