Her technique was sharp and precise. Every move was so smooth, you could tell she’d put in years of practice.
Lydia smiled, her voice light and pleasant. “I think this contestant is impressive too. With a little more guidance, she’ll definitely become a rising star in medicine.”
Another judge spoke up. “Charlotte, right? I heard she beat Letty at Cabinda last time. The mouse she operated on actually survived.”
“She got perfect scores in the first two rounds. Her surgical skills must be solid. If her hands weren’t injured, I’d love to see just how good she really is.”
Perfect scores in both rounds?
Lydia’s smile faded. If Dr. David hadn’t slipped her the questions, how could some student from the sticks be this talented? When the results were announced, Lydia would be the one to rip that mask off.
Everyone figured Charlotte would just muddle through the surgery, but then she picked up the scalpel.
“She’s got bandages on her hands. How’s she supposed to cut anything?” someone in the crowd blurted out. “Is this a joke?”
Both her hands were injured. One wrong move and she could slice the wrong spot.
“Even a rabbit’s life matters. Charlotte’s being reckless.”
“She’s actually going for it.”
While the audience murmured in shock, Anthony watched from the corner, a hint of a smile on his lips. His eyes, dark and full of something softer, never left the screen where Charlotte was working.
Charlotte moved quickly. The scalpel sliced through the rabbit’s skin. Her other hand, wrapped in bandages, grabbed the hemostat and pressed gently on the wound.
Her left hand’s fingertips slid into the abdominal cavity. Both hands worked together, searching for the appendix, tying off the blood vessels, cutting and removing the organ, then sewing everything up with perfect, steady stitches.
She pressed the button to signal she was done.
Charlotte tossed the scalpel onto the tray and turned the little rabbit’s head to face the camera. The animal was still alive.
The whole thing happened so fast the camera almost couldn’t keep up.
