Asher was desperate to know who Lemira’s backer was, besides Thaddeus.
Mrs. Waverly studied Asher’s face. Seeing that he genuinely seemed unaware, her mood suddenly brightened.

All it took was one phone call for Thaddeus to find out who had arranged for the reporter.
He needed to feel out the situation: was this attack aimed at Lemira, or at him?
Mrs. Waverly’s smile became more genuine. “I’m sure many people were wondering on what basis Lemira was standing on that stage. Now, after this test, everyone can see she has real talent p>
But Mrs. Waverly still suspected that something had gone wrong, that Lemira had somehow gotten the questions in advance to answer them so perfectly.
She was sure her own nephew, who was as thick as thieves with Orion, was behind it.
Thaddeus glanced at Stella. “You shouldn’t bring Stella out to these things. And you should think more carefully about the character of the man you want marrying into the family. Nothing is even set in stone yet, and bringing him out like this is bad for Stella’s reputation p>

Because of her leg, most of the older boys and girls in her social circle were quite protective of her.

Asher’s face fell. But before he could respond, Evelina stepped forward. “Mr. Draven, I know you have an issue with Asher because of Lemmy. But in a family conflict, the fault is never one-sided. I’m sure Lemira has her own shortcomings p>
Asher caught on. “If you have a problem with me because of Lemira, Mr. Draven, then I have nothing more to say p>
“Alright, now. I’ve met Ms. Langston a few times, and I have a sense of her temperament. A family squabble is hardly a major issue p>
With these words, Mrs. Waverly made it clear she was on Asher’s side.
Stella lowered her head and said nothing.

He knew that bringing Mrs. Waverly in on the Al project was a surefire win.
